Powering a sega cdx with rechargeable batteries

So thanks in advance for your help with this! I'm trying to power a Sega cdx off of some 9.6v rechargeable NiMH batteries using one end of a broken Sega ac adapter. The cdx ac adapter outputs 9.5v@1.5A and the batteries are 9.6v with a 2000 mah capacity.

I have almost no knowledge about this and can't figure out why it doesn't power on so any help is appreciated!

 

Oh I found out Ben Heck did this in one of his early podcasts but I would like to keep my cdx as is lol

    If your 9.6v battery is rechargeable in the first place(depends on your battery's chemistry), you would like to charge it with a voltage that causes a current into that battery equal to about 25% (2.5-3C) or less of the battery's rated output current.
    If the battery is rated to produce 1 amp per hr, you would charge it at aprox 250 milliamps for 4 hrs (give or take the remaining charge still in the battery).
    To produce the charging current, you'll need a source of power having a slightly higher voltage than the battery itself.
    You might need a voltage source in the 11-12v range and a means to limit the current from that source going into the recharging battery.
    If you have a amperage gauge and an adjustable voltage source, you could adjust the voltage source to manually maintain the proper current over the recharge cycle.
    Ideally you'd use the proper charger meant for that battery or at least that battery's chemistry.

    Hi Rhysthekeen,

    Are you sure you have the + of the battery on the same pole of the adapter as the + of the AC adapter. Does the AC adapter indicate that the output is DC. This may be a graphic that looks like a long line over 3 dashes. If the poles are matched and the adapter has a DC output the battery should work. 9.6 Volts and 9.5 Volts are compatible in this application.

    As certain as I can be without  a multimeter which comes tomorrow. The ac adapter outputs 9.5v DC @ 1.5 A. The cable is positive inside negative and consists of 2 groups of copper wires, one wrapped in green plastic sheath which should be the positive and the rest spread around without any sheath. I take this to be the negative?

    Hi,

    What you say makes sense. You should be able to confirm when your meter arrives. The amperage rating on the battery and power supply are only there to give you an indication of the upper limit of power available under suitable load. Let me know what you find out. I would start by measuring the voltage of the battery to confirm it is in good condition and charged.
