Solar Battery Charger

tallen121
tallen121 over 7 years ago

I would like to preface this post by saying I have no idea what I'm doing.

So here's what I have going on.

I bought a bunch of solar garden lights at my dollar store. Each light comes with a solar panel and a rechargeable AAA battery.

I've connected all of the batteries up in series, and I've connected up the solar panels in some horrible series/parallel hybrid.

My goal with this is to hook up the batteries to the solar panels, and connect all of that to the interior of a car USB charger to use it to make a solar panel phone charger.

However, I'm not very familiar or comfortable with electricity. So how would I go about connecting the solar panels to the batteries, and eventually to the usb power? Any help is very much appreciated.image

    Hi Tallen,

Thanks for the heads up on your skill base.

Hooking the batteries directly to the solar cells is very bad!

Depending upon the battery you use, each is sensitive to the rate at which they charge.  Some batteries easily overheat and burst into flames.

You are going to need a charging circuit.  I suggest you buy one off the shelf so you match the charger to the batteries you intend to use.

With the charger, you can then select the configuration of solar cells to get the proper input voltage.

You also then have a standard configuration for connecting the batteries, either parallel or serial, depending upon the controller.

The controller will then properly sequence the power to the batteries so that they are carefully brought up to full charge without overstressing any of the components.

While simple in concept, using solar cells and batteries needs to be done carefully.

Be aware, you can end up with a fire hazard, so use the right tools for the job.

All of my garden lights came with this little twiddly thing. Can I do something with this? I just figured it was a NOT gate to make sure the light turns on when the solar panel isn't producing.image

Does the twiddly thing have a part number on it? ou can type the number in to a search engine on the internet to find out what it is. If it is a voltage regulator it will have Plus an Minus input from the solar cells and a plus output to the battery.

    Cheers Dale

So I'm looking around at charge controllers and they do in fact seem like something super useful to have. However, I'm not exactly sure what to look for in a charge controller. All of them seem to work on a certain voltage/ampage parameters, and I'm not exactly sure how to tell what volt/amps I'm working with. I have a multimeter but to be honest I don't really understand how to use it. Plus all of these charge controllers seem to have only 1 battery slot. So do I really need 6 of them? Because that'll turn my $20 project into an $80 project.

It doesn't have a +- that I can see. But it does have a part number. It's just really tiny. It says YX8018 Ae7b1 or something. After googling YX8018 I found a site talking about hacking the very garden lights I bought. https://ez.analog.com/community/university-program/blog/2014/11/14/hacking-an-led-solar-garden-light

From the description, this circuit is set up to do a controlled charge of a very specific battery.  The design is simple and selected for just a single type of battery.

It is not intended as a general purpose battery charger.

But the batteries I have are the ones that came with the circuit.

That may be, but it still does not make it a good design.

Clearly nobody bothered to run a safety check on the product before they allowed it to be imported.

It is an accident waiting to happen.

I buy it. Ok so let's ignore the hazard batteries. What can I do to at least get those solar panels to charge my phone?

Yes, but as I said earlier, you need to get a charger circuit that can charge the batteries safely.

Do some web searches on your battery type and you will find a lot of places that have the charge circuit and then you will know how many solar cells you need to use and in what configuration to support the charger.
