Is anyone using an alternative energy power source in their homes? Anyone off the grid?
More importantly for those who do use solar, wind, or the like, have you recovered your investment yet?

I live in an apartment, and was thinking about solar pannels on the windows. If this size solar pannel can generate 40W, how about one that is 6 feet by 8 feet?

I built a solar/wind hybrid system at my home on the outskirts of a parish capital on the southwest coast of jamaica, WI. I used 10, 120 Watt panels, wired for 24v, and connected to a 12 battery bank comprised of 3 strings of 4x6v batteries wired for 24v. I also use a Whisper 200 marine wind turbine, rated for 24v.
This system handles all my current needs through a 2400w inverter but, due to the fact that the inverter was bought as a 60 hertz unit instead of 50 hertz, which is used out here, I am unable to run my refridgerator or washing machine on the system, but all else, lights, cooling fans, entertainment, cooking, etc is handled by the system, which cost a total of 17000 US$ to purchase and set up.
Current grid bills for the average home are running at 12000 JA$ per month, or around US$140/month, and expected to rise due to the rapid increase in the price of fossil fuels.
Added to which, I am not subject to the frequent power cuts which affect the grid on a regular basis
i want to outfit my sunroom with solar pnaels on the roof of it as well as a rain collecting system to water my garden in the summer, i think i could possibly run my 3 sub pumps of those panels since they turn on quite often and in case of a power outage i would have a better back up than my watch dog system
