Is anyone using an alternative energy power source in their homes? Anyone off the grid?

More importantly for those who do use solar, wind, or the like, have you recovered your investment yet?

i want to outfit my sunroom with solar pnaels on the roof of it as well as a rain collecting system to water my garden in the summer, i think i could possibly run my 3 sub pumps of those panels since they turn on quite often and in case of a power outage i would have a better back up than my watch dog system
