It depends on the type of sensor, some sensors are digital and others are analog.
From the digital ones you will only get a 1 or 0, which means it is either ON (0 V) or OFF(24 V).
Depending on the sensor it can be ON when there is a metal in front of it or OFF when there is a metal in front.

It depends which type sensor you use analog or digital. If it is an analog sensor it depends on which type output signal the sensor has voltage or amperage . Also it is very important to know how you are measuring the output signal of the sensor.

Yes, that is correct Wesley. There are sensors that gives milliAmpere as output and there are sensors that gives Voltage as output.
