Amazon robots: the coding that went into this is *insane*

Hi Guys.

As the guy responsible for site content, I spend a fair amount of time each week researching trends and topics we should invest more into here on element14. I'm currently on the hunt for cool topics in industrial automation and factory robotics. I came upon the following video which shows how Amazon's warehouse automation uses automatic pallet fetchers to fulfill customer orders. I've watched it twice already, and it still blows me away that this actually works.

I hope you enjoy watching it, too. image

Are there areas of industrial automation you'd like to learn more about, or examples of topics and content you'd like to see more of here on element14?

Let me know!

Cheers,
Sagar

Paul-- That was pretty mesmerizing. I liked the Kraftwerk-inspired music as well! Kind of funny how there were nearly as many lights in the audience as everyone was trying to capture the experience on…

I bet there are some _hilarious_ outtakes during quality assurance testing.

It is a perfect task for robots.

You put in a few simple rules, right of way rules and then the robots go into the queue for assignment.

Once tasked the robot goes undistractedly to its assignment and brings the item to the packers.

Then they are sent back to return the items to their assigned location.

Once they return, they reenter the assignment queue.

Now if you had people involved, they would stop and talk in the walk ways, forget where they are going and put stuff back in the wrong place.

Robots are the key to simple inventory control and distribution.  Humans just get in the way.

I wonder if they have/could distribute the robots around the warehouse so that the system could pick the closest, not necessarily the robots in order.

    Paul,

Fairly certain they use a zone principle through out the area. There are simple algorithms to determine shortest path for a given assignment and charge level for the robots involved. Would not be good to send an undercharged robot.image

I wonder if they have a bot to carry a person in order to rescue a bot in distress ??

It would be great if they could rescue each other to the service area. image
