Open Collector Output interface to 24V Digital Input, Inverted

tjslip
tjslip over 10 years ago

I have a stepper motor (multi-axis' in fact) that provides a limit signal (E11 NEGATIVE LIMIT) that is open collector output:

I need to connect that signal to an opto-isolated 24V digital input (no internal pull-up resistor I assume):

Currently there is a circuit board installed that does this, and that contains:

  • A regulator IC for 5V
  • A pullup resistor circuit to 5V.
  • An IC (ULN2003 Darlington Array) to up the voltage to 24V and
  • An IC (Philips  74HC14N74HC14N HEX INVERTING SCHMITT TRIGGER to invert the signal (to active high instead of active low I assume)

I want to eliminate this custom made circuit board and use "industrial-strength" off-the-shelf DIN rail mounted items to interface the motor limit output with the digital input.

I'm a mechanical engineer and am kindly requesting some advice how to do this professionally, without custom circuitry.

Thanks in advance.

Tom.

Easyest thing is to use the opto transistor output to the input of your 24V din rail device (You dont say what this is so I will assume it has a 24V logic input ) If your input device needs a pullup then something like a 10K resistor should suffice to 24V from the collector of the opto / input to your device. this will ensure the input is 24V or 0 depending on state of stepper

Without knowing what your input device is, it is hard to say. some industrial devices have internal pullup, some dont and some have a lower input impedance so 10K might not work.

Either way the interfaceing is trivial but more info would be required to provide more accurate feedback.

If you need more then provide a schematic of it all and also the model type of input device your intending to connect this to

    Thanks

    Peter
