Phase rotation circuit switching

Former Member
Former Member over 14 years ago

I am looking to bring three phase legs and a neutral line into

a test box and , using one switch preferably or switches, swap phase 1 to 2,

2 to 3 and 3 to 1 and 1 to 3, 2 to 1 and 3 to 2.  Can anyone suggest the best way

to accomplish this.  The input is normally 125VAC,@ less than one amp.

Those switches do exist. They are called cross switches. If you intend to switch an inductive load, like a motor, you need more contact spacing to prevent an arc between the contacts when the current is interrupted. The normal voltage between the contacts is already 216 Volt. The best way is a 3 position swith. The middle position is the OFF position. The outer positions are left and right rotation. So you need a 3 position 3 contact switch. Or a 3 position 4 contact switch if you want to have a contact in the neutral wire. Often 3 phase contactors are used, with a control circuit preventing energizing both coils at the same time. This way you can operate a hoist, using an up and a down button.

    Thank you Johan,

I appreciate your help.  We found a single deck rotary

switch from Grayhill with 3 poles and 3 positions per

pole at 30 degrees rotation per position. We'll run the neutral

    straight through bypassing the switch.
