SteelQuad: Steel Quality Sensing Device :: Mould Design (Week 3)

The mould will be used for casting concrete. For this project I will use 2 mould sizes; 2” dia. and 4” dia. with a height of 5”. Rebar samples will have 6” in length. Concrete will be poured into the mould with a rebar (steel) in the middle. Inductance readings will be taken on these specimens.

    I will have 2 different diameters of rebars and 3 grades for each; 33, 40, 60 and 3 samples for each grades. So I will make a bunch of concrete slab, with 2 different classes (class A and B), and different sizes (cylinder's diameter; 2" & 4"). I will also subject the concrete slabs to difference curing durations.

     

    This project is just a proof of concept for a bigger research that will take time and money. To get real world data I have to subject concrete slabs to loads, temp, and even the material quality of cement, aggregates should be considered.

    Have you considered just making a bunch of 1-inch concrete slabs so that you could put different sizes of rebar under them to get a better measurement on depth/steel volume needed to get good readings?

    If you just pour the concrete over the rebar, you might get closer to your "real world" requirement, but then you have just one measurement.

    If you make a series of test components, then you can check on the sensitivity variations.

     

    You also might want to use different concrete mixes to see if they also play a part in your measurements.
