SteelSeries designs eye-tracking peripheral as a training tool for gamers

That’s no magic wand but rather a training tool for gamers to hone their skills with. (via SteelSeries)

Everybody wants a leg-up while gaming against others in an online battle to the death, however not everybody can be the next Fatal1ty and practicing for 8-hours a day isn’t realistic for most people. Even getting the best hardware probably won’t do much in terms of providing additional skill but gaming peripheral maker SteelSeries thinks their new Sentry Eye Tracker might give those with lesser gaming prowess the edge they need to become a contender.

The tool, designed in partnership with Tobii Technology, is something of a virtual, visual coach that tracks, analyzes and benchmarks gamer’s eye movements during gameplay and provides real-time feedback meant to improve gameplay. The tool sits beneath player’s monitors and gathers a wide range of data such as where the player’s eyes are fixated, for how long they are looking at that area and Fixations per Minute (FPM).

That FPM is then compared to Actions per Minute (APM), or how many functions were executed while fixated on that particular area of the display. Low values of FPM indicates that the player can process a lot of information in a short time, while higher numbers suggest players should probably take Ritalin (just joking).

Tobii Technology, the brains behind the tracking tech, brought in some of the world’s best gamers to provide not-so-great Sentry gamers with a standard they can base their own scores against, which could either bolster the weaker players or make them quit gaming all together. Suffice it to say, the Sentry was designed to provide feedback for improved game-play, however there probably won’t be a money back guarantee if it doesn’t. SteelSeries Sentry Eye Tracker will be available later this year, however the price isn’t yet known.

I don't play games, but I can see where the same technology could improve access for disabled people.

Hopefully others will mod the device for other uses.
