Did you ever get this working? I am having the same issue. I even tried the manual configuration route with a fresh raspian image and that doesn't work either. I am seeing the exact same values you are seeing on the output of the python scripts. I even modified the /etc/modules file to include i2c-bcm2708 and i2c-dev to get the i2c dev files and still no luck.... Next step is to try another raspberry pi board... maybe ours have dead i2c interfaces???
