Brainstorm: Basketball Score Keeper

Former Member

Hi!

I am working on a basketball hoop that can keep track of the number of shots made. I have made my first iteration and it works well enough. I basically have a long limit switch sticking into the hoop that is attached to an Electric Imp. While this works, the spring has started bending from being hit by a ball repeatedly. I've tried to use a Sharp IR Distance Sensor but it doesn't detect the basketball (I've tried 3 different kinds).

Could potentially use an ultrasonic sensor but it would have to be placed inside of the net because the net would get in the way....right? Any ideas are welcome, I have kind of hit a wall on this!

Thanks!

On further research, it seems that somebody has been able to make it work with a HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor:

and one using the previously suggested infrared sensor:

Thanks for the links!  I had tried an ultrasonic sensor before but the regulation net is more "dense" than the ones on mini hoops so the sensor doesn't always have a clear view of the inside of the hoop. I could cut away some of the net but I'd like to keep the hoop as standard as possible.

As for the beam break, I will try this out this week. My only concern is having an LED exposed on the rim where a stray ball could hit it or its wires.
