Rotation sensor for treadmill roller

Looking for a very low voltage rotation sensor for a modification I'm doing to a manual treadmill. What part would you suggest I look at?

Hi Jay,
Have you given any thought to using a magnetic reed switch. It will close each time a magnet passes it and it will operate at any voltage. The pulses can be counted and using the diameter of the treadmill roller you can calculate speed or even acceleration.
