Poll -- How Much Do You Know about Time of Flight Sensors?

Hi all!

I'm preparing to propose an activity on element14 for a program I manage regarding Time of Flight sensors. It would be helpful for me to know everyone's knowledge level. I'd appreciate your input in this poll. Thanks.

I'm not sure how much I actually know but I have spent many happy hours working with TOF ultrasonic rangefinders for mobile robots. Usually these were individual sensors but I have tried a number of times to make a phased array of ultrasonic rangefinders. I'm sure it's possible but I have never managed to get it all together and working.

    I checked other.

I have used ultrasonic TDR (time domain reflectometry) on a small scale.

(LED Road Test - Vehicle Situational Awareness System - Detecting the Borg in the Driveway - Blog 14 Dec 26 )

I call this general technique TDR. TOF to me is a one way trip time measurement.

Recently I have worked with a wearable laser distance measurement device interfaced to a smart phone.

I have done some design work with LIDAR but not much beyond interfacing.

Also did a bit of research into micropower impulse radar.

Way back when - I put together a huge gyro stabilized laser profilometer system that flew in an aircraft to measure the distance to the ground with 6 inch accuracy. The receiver lens was 6 inches in diameter. The stabilizer was a WWII bomb site stabilizer that had 4 gyros running at about 100,000 RPM. The research aircraft had bomb bay doors that opened when we wanted to take data. On my first trip, I was not prepared for how cold the air is at 10,000 feet. They said bring a jacket - I brought an uninsulated shell - after all it was summertime. The is no jacket that will keep you warm at those speeds and altitudes.

The thermally stabilized reference clock was as big as my desktop PC. The data acquisition system took up a rack and had a big tape recorder in it.

I've used the short range (under 4m) microLIDAR sensors.  Hopefully this will be for longer range sensors.

rscasny In an aircraft with tricycle retracts there are 3 sensors they are commonly called WOWR, WOWL, WOWC for Weight On  Wheel. When all three sensors show WOW (OFF) then a clock starts. The Clock is TOF
