I recently bought an Analog Discovery II, from Digilent. This was designed in part by Analog Devices Inc and National Instruments. For about $399 new or about $300 used, you get a bargain in my opinion. This unit combines the following in one, small (3" x 3" x 3/4") package:
-2-Channel, 100 MSPS, 14-bit, 10+ MHz BW Oscilloscope
-2 Channel, 100 MSPS, 14-Bit , 12+ MHz BW Arbitrary Waveform Generator
2-Channel, 0.5 watt Total, 0.5V to 5.0V or -0.5V to -5V, 700 mA/Channel Power Supply
2-Channel +/-25 VAC or VDC.Voltmeter
2-Channel Datalogger
16-Bit Logic Analyzer
16-Bit Digital Pattern Generator
16-Bit Protocol Analyzer
Spectrum Analyzer
Impedance Analyzer
Network Analyze
Supports External Triggering
This is an amazing piece of test equipment for the price. I wish I had something Like this years ago. As it runs off a wall wart, it can be used at home or in a small lab without taking up much bench space. It has 2 BNC connectors for for using two scope probes and 2 BNC connectors for the arbitrary waveform generator. It comes with free downloadable software to run on a PC or laptop. And it can interface to National Instruments Labview.
When I'm working in my lab and want to take the project home for the evening or weekend, this is a perfect way to continue working while still having very good test equipment to work with.
Some other options are a plug-in board with relays and screw terminals for impedance analysis of components, like capacitors, inductor, and transformers.
I'm very impressed with this unit and I highly recommend it to anyone that needs even one of the above listed pieces of equipment. And for those on a very tight budget, you can get the Analog Discovery I, the older model with mostly the same specifications, for as little as $75 on Ebay if you look hard.
