Electronic Load Project Part 1

Hi Everyone,

 

This is a project that most people including myself have been wanting to do for a while. I would firstly like to thank Robert Peter Oakes for the inspiration to actually get off my ass and start the project.

 

As I am slowly delving into the world of Video Blogs I have decided to take this project online to document my progress along the way. Similar in principlle to what other blogs are and looking at expanding the project further to create a more complex controllable solution like PC control or Embedded control (more likely).

 

For the beginner this should be easy to follow,for the advanced I think I oversimplified the concept a bit too much.

    Hi Malcolm,

    I am very appreciative of Robert Peter Oakes for all the time he has put into helping everyone. I am looking forward to your posts and videos too, magic smoke and all. I generally have to write my projects up as I have a speech problem that would make me difficult to understand on video. Thanks for including us in your build.

    John in my blog it deals with day to day stumbling, I hope it shows sometimes the real aspect of designing, some aspects will be prepared so as not to spend many hour on camera but explain some of the pitfalls visually that can happen. Maybe even see some magic smoke image

    Hi Malcolm and Peter,

    I too am building a DC load. I have my schematics and have breadboarded and bench tested the subsystems of my design. Since I do not have the extensive knowledge that you have it will be a bit of luck if my design works properly. Fortunately my needs are fairly simple so it will probably be adequate. If it works as planned I should be able to cover the range of 3 to 35 volts and up to 6 or 7 amps. I have a planned a system that adds current limiting power resistors as the voltage is increased so that the active device is not stressed at the higher voltages. I am taking pictures and making notes and I planned to write a blog when I have a working unit. I began working on this back in February, inspired by Peters Power Supply Build. Thanks to both of you for the ideas and inspiration.

    Thanks Peter, it has been a nice progression into vBlogging. Still a long way to go to gain confidence in talking to a camera instead of others. I do enjoy the possible stimulation of others into the field. I am getting on the long thin side so best to start educating the younger generation now and I will concentrate on some concept developments.

     

    I hope that my process will come up with some typical stumbles as this is key to learning. Although with a fair bit of XP I have already learn't some tricks. Still more to learn though.

     

    I have been watching most of your videos when time allows me too. Very good instruction, pleased to continue looking. I saw the posts on the DAC, I though look forward to your video based on embedded coding using non windows based programming. Embedded computing is not my strong point so I hope to see a couple of ideas come from that.

    Hi there Malcolm.

     

    Nice start, I look forward to seeing how it progresses.

     

    You may have noticed, I published on Youtube a week or so ago, the final analogue build of my DC load https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuYB9qPHGNY , I will be publishing the schematics and other details in the next day or so here on E14, just been busy getting my DAC8734 tutorials done first as these are aimed at the next stage of my builds for my power system projects,

     

    I hope you might find it useful in helping you with your build and maybe provide a few ideas, or I may glean some ideas from your build as it progresses.

     

    You are absolutly right about oscillations if your feedback it not right, my schematics try to limit that to some degree but at the cost of transient response time. My power Supply project on the other hand has been dealing with that in a much different way and the schematics and principals of that will be used to try to improve upon my work so far for my DC load and the basis for many power control projects.

     

    I am looking forward to your take on this and see where you go with it, It is always good to see how someone else approaches the topic and we can all learn from each other, so if i have questions I will ask, and of course will help if you need too, so feel free to ask.

     

    I dont beleive this project can be too simple or too complex. there is something to learn at all levels of skill with this and using a project like a DC Load or power supply is a great way to learn so much about electronics and component practical use, so I hope you comming into the party helps others get the confidence to try to build and or design one of their own and not feel it is beyond them

     

    Good luck , i think it will turn out just great
