Magic Leap unveils its long-awaited AR headset

Magic Leap reveals its AR headset which aims to open up new building experiences for users and creators alike. This headset looks like something out of Riddick or Mad Max, kind of cool. (Photo via Magic Leap)

If you’ve been following Magic Leap, you know it’s been a long, somewhat mysterious journey. For those not in the know, Magic Leap was founded in 2011, but not much else was known about the company. Regardless, they’ve received quite a bit of funding from the likes of Google even though no one really knew what they were working on. To closeout 2017, the company finally revealed their big project: Magic Leap One: Creator Edition headset.

This new mixed reality headset wants to change how we interact with the world using AR. Apparently, it works by having the device trick your brain into seeing things that aren’t there via an artificial light field. The device is meant to open up new building experiences for creators and let them mix the digital with the physical.

Another AR experience the headset wants to bring you is the ability to collaborate with other people using virtual avatars, similar to Facebook Spaces. The device can also be used for gaming letting enemies appear on your own wall or ceiling. The company is also working on a Creator Portal where people will have access to their SDK, along with other tools, documents, and learning resources needed for various projects.

Like most VR/AR headsets, it’s equipped with many cameras and motion sensors, but unlike models like the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift, the Magic Leap is lightweight and compact. There are no bulky wires or awkward looking headgear. Rather, this design looks like something out of Mad Max and even we have to admit, it does look pretty cool. The company boasts the device is comfortable to wear for extended periods of time.

The secret behind the slim design is a disc-shaped “Lightpack” that houses the processor and graphics chip; most devices build them in the headsets. This “Lightpack” then clips onto your pants or belt with ease. The headset also comes with a small hand controller, similar to ones that come with Gear VR or Daydream view. The controller is equipped with a touchpad on top and haptic feedback.

It all sounds very promising, but will it meet expectations? We’ll have to wait and see when it releases this year. While there’s no exact date or price point for Magic Leap, you can sign up here to know when it becomes available.

Neat product.  I like how they keep the headgear weight down.

It's easy to keep the weight down when the "product" doesn't exist and in all likelihood never will.
