Wire Spittin' Wire Spit

Organizing wire stock is an important requirement in any lab but there are always costs and compromises. This is yet another attempt to deal with some of my spools of solder and hook-up wire. So far it is a great solution for my solder spools. It would be a good solution for my hook-up wire as well, except I am not sure I want to allocate the required real estate to the cause.

The solution provides decent wire management at a cost of 74 grams of plastic per wire spool ($1.30 worth of plastic)

You can see how it works in the following video.

It was an interesting challenge to design all these features into a simple wire dispenser, and it turned out well enough to take over some prime real estate on my bench.

I will add the .stl files to the blog this week for anyone who wants to give it a try.

Update - the six .stl files have been attached here.

axle2.stl

knob.stl

PuckBase2.stl

snipper.stl

stacker.stl

WireDispenser3.stl

The stacking plate uses both the stacker file and the puck base file.

They should all know what one is on here after the fantastic Pi Rotary entry in Project14 from balearicdynamics

Hey Dough, another ideas as simple as efficient. Like it! (my problem is the constantly different kind of spools I use for wires). Enrico

Very clever modular design. I personally like to be able to hold the spool of wire or solder in my hand - guess it's a habit.... My biggest problem is finding and storing the appropriate wire that I want…

dougw This is a neat idea but most of my wire is on larger spools. I have a dual solder dispenser with my Metcal soldering system as well as a probe/sponge. Most of what I do is Wire-Wrap, and I have lots of precut/stripped wire as well as a draw full of precut -no striped. Plus a lot of Wire-Wrap sockets.  Just out of  room!

Out of room is a classic understatement for both of us. I have a bunch of bigger spools too - no way I'm printing containers for all those oddball sizes. My wire wrap  stuff is on tiny spools for an electric wrapper, but I also have a weird bigger spool that is made up of a zillion precut multicolored wire wrap lengths all wound onto one big spool. When I bought it I thought it was a continuous wire spool, but when I took off the wrapper it "sproinged" all over the place. Rewinding it wasn't going to happen so it is now in a plastic tub with a suitably relaxed diameter.

dougw Glad, you liked Revolution #3

I have stuff in the office/lab

I have stuff in the garage

I have more stuff in a 400 sq ft Storage Locker

I really have to learn to get rid of stuff!
