Tektronix New Product Highlights at NAB2013

Tektronix Addresses Broadcasters Reference Generator Requirements with New SPG8000

BEAVERTON, Ore., February 19, 2013 – In legacy broadcast operational environments, the Sync Pulse Generator has been used to offer very basic reference signal such as Black Burst signal and Linear Time Code signals to synchronize operational video equipment. However, synchronization requirements from modern production, post production, and broadcast facilities have to handle multiple video formats, with multi-channel audio, and ancillary data, with the highest reliability possible.

A new class of SPG – the Master Sync / Master Clock Reference Generator has emerged to set a new standard in reference generators, providing critical timing and synchronization signals for modern broadcast, production (including mobile trucks and OB vans) and post-production facilities by offering sync signals, test signals, and ANC data generation capabilities.

The fully-featured SPG8000 comes standard with individually timeable black burst (with VITC support) and HDTV tri-level sync outputs, 10 MHz and 48 kHz word clock outputs, linear time code (LTC) outputs and network time protocol (NTP) server support. Optional capabilities include GPS synchronization, HD/SD-SDI signal generation (with ATC support) with an upgrade path for 3G-SDI signal generation (software upgrade), 8 channels AES/EBU audio signal generation plus digital audio reference signal (DARS) output, and analogue colour bar and test signals outputs.

In addition to combining extensive sync pulse generation and master clock reference generation capabilities in the single device, the SPG8000 incorporates several key features, including Tektronix' Stay GenlockRegistered capability, redundant power supplies and SNMP and Web UI support. The SPG8000 can also be remotely configured and monitored, meeting a key requirement of broadcasters as they increasingly deploy automation and central monitoring and control systems in their facilities. The SPG8000's key features in this regard are its support for SNMP and the new Tektronix Web user interface, which enable easy integration into broadcasters' monitoring and control systems.

Tektronix New PQA600A Now Offers Industry’s First Picture Quality Analysis on HDCP Encrypted Content

Video equipment manufacturers and service providers constantly need to differentiate themselves by delivering high quality HD content. They require objective quality metrics of what the end viewer will see to accurately assess the ultimate video quality. Analysing content from the HDMI output of a source component such as a STB or Blu-ray player is critical, but not currently possible due to the restrictions around the HDCP license.  Today, they lack the ability to comprehensively assess the objective picture quality of their devices and services because there hasn’t been a picture quality analysis tool compliant with HDCP.

The new PQA600A meets this need, offering an HDCP compliant HDMI interface. With the new PQA600A, engineers in manufacturing can directly evaluate the picture quality of the video stream outputs through an HDMI interface. Video engineers can effectively model how equipment changes will impact picture quality through the network, across their head-end facilities to the STB. Additionally, the PQA600A now offers a 3G-SDI interface supporting the 1080p fast progressive video format (1080p50/59) and real-time video format conversion. Equipment Manufacturers can now have connectivity to HDMI with HDCP and 3G-SDI for end-to-end testing and evaluate the quality of the up / down converter in a STB or Blu-ray player. The New PQA600A enables video equipment manufacturers and service providers to perform comprehensive, repeatable picture quality analysis and a direct comparison with competitors’ units to verify video quality performance differences. The new pricing makes this unique product easy to fit into any budget.

Tektronix Expands Its Family of Solutions for Network-Wide Video Quality Monitoring to 10G and QAM Network Access

The continued growth in the number of digital services continues to challenge video network monitoring. Monitoring is now more critical than ever in 10G core networks, and for cable operators, QAM HFC networks as well as QAM access networks. Tektronix is addressing both of these challenges with exciting new additions to its Sentry family of Video Quality Monitors. Sentry Video Quality Monitors now bring its unique industry leading QoS and QoE monitoring to the very heart of 10G digital video networks. Only Sentry offers video quality monitoring insight for QoE and QoS, with 3Gbps throughput. By monitoring video network traffic over 10G digital video networks, service affecting issues can now be identified anywhere in the network. The second key addition is the new Sentry Edge II, which extends that insight to QAM access points, with advanced post QAM RF monitoring performance. Sentry Edge II detects RF modulation and Transport Stream errors at the hub, headend or wherever QAM is used. Cable operators now have access to the information needed to proactively monitor RF, before issues affect subscribers.  Comprehensive and industry-leading high-quality RF measurements make it easier and faster to pinpoint issues.  High quality MER measurements up to 41dB allow providers to detect signal quality degradation sooner, so they can take action before this issue impacts the subscriber's viewing experience. Sentry Edge II offers more tuners per unit than competing products, lowering the cost of edge monitoring.  Providers can choose from two high-density models—4 or 8 tuners—both designed to minimise rack space and power costs.
