What would your ultimate hobbyist electronics work space look like?

Instructorman
Instructorman over 11 years ago

For many years (24 to be exact) my home electronics test bench has been set up in our study, sharing space with our home office computer desk and my son's computer desk.  As the photo below illustrates, I have plum run out of space.  There is not enough open space on my desk to set up anything bigger than a small dev kit.  Components and test equipment and projects underway, but not finished, are accumulating under, beside and behind the desk.  The space is so cluttered that I have to carefully untangle test leads and scope probes every time I go to make a measurement.  The clutter is also dangerous.  My hot air soldering station is covered with parts and sits very close to my computer speakers and a stack of test equipment.  Test leads have been singed accidentally as they get draped over idling soldering irons or hot air tools.  It is time for a fresh start in a new space.

We are renovating our basement this fall and I have secured a good sized space for a new general purpose work room, including a generous allocation for an electronics development area. The space is going to be 11' 6" by 15' (about 3.5 m by 4.6 m).  I have been looking at a variety of professional workbenches, like this bench from IAC available from Newark. There are a lot of experienced hobbyists and professionals in the Element14 community with uncounted years of experience working in electronics.  As I am in the process of thinking about how to set up my new space, I thought it would be great to invite suggestions and advice from the collective wisdom of Element14 members on what might be nice to put into a brand new, purpose built electronics work space.

My 36 years of professional and hobbyist experience in electronics provides me with a vision of what I'd like in my new workspace, but that doesn't mean I can't learn from the experience and vision of others.  So, I invite your thoughts, suggestions and wisdom.  What sort of bench arrangement would you recommend?  How would you organize the test equipment?  What about lighting?  Parts storage?  I can't commit to following though on any ideas, but it will be great to read what others think a great workspace could look like.

Well, my electronics shop is still in its infancy.  I have the drop desk and clutter area on the left, Coding/computer area on the corner, Arduino work surface, instrument rack, and then the test/solder/rework area.  Audio entertainment is provided by my iPad and JamBox.  Mood lighting is supplied by undercabinet mount LED strip lighting that is controlled via a footswitch on the floor.  Larger 35' high warehouse bay lighting fully illuminates the space when I need it as well.  I'm still looking to acquire a decent bench top DVM that has the ability to read capacitance.  I'm open to suggestions on that.  The "straddle stool" is made by RGP, a dental stool manufacturer, and you sit on it like a horse saddle and it forces you into a good posture -- it is quite comfortable unless you sit down on it wrong.  image  There is a space heater on the floor as I am out in a cubicle that is in a 15,000 sq ft. warehouse that can get down to about 55 degrees in the dead of winter.  I think I need some pictures on my drab gray cubicle walls, possibly something inspiring.  There is not a huge selection of hand tools on this bench, most of them are sitting in mugs.  It is not a big deal, as I have tools all over the place.  In fact, in the next room, I have my dental workshop area with an automotive style cabinet filled with every tool imaginable.  Beyond that I have a tool bag on my service van, and a complete tool assortment in my automotive garage at home and a set at our cabin!  How many sets of tools does a man really need before it gets ridiculous anyhow?

    Hi Mike!

That looks nice (is neatness hereditary? : )

The automotive style tool cabinets are cool - one can never have enough tools : )

The dental stool is neat too.

I'm aiming for a single-desk environment (I don't have as much space) for electronics work, all parts are stored in a small room, and all mechanical stuff goes on in a small garage.

I've found some old shallow wooden drawers (probably previously used by an entymologist! - there were glass screens in there which I removed) which are perfect for storing part-soldered circuit boards and other projects, and then hiding any clutter when I need to.

Well, I'll say this much.  Mine may look neat, but jw0752's actually is neat, he's far more organized than I am.

Maybe a folding table would get you by in a pinch for extra work space.  Another option would be a desk that is hinged on the wall.  Of course the downside to either of those options is that you would have to clean the bench up before you put it away and got your room back.  Maybe you will have to get creative and vertically integrate.

I too, await the Shabaz image. image

You just know the table will be made of lego....image

I'm not giving a picture of mine, I tried to clean up and gave up.

Luckily I found some room somewhere else.

The cleanup is going to forced on me soon, as we need to have the whole of the inside repainted, so I can't escape.

I need to make one strategic bit of furniture (or buy and modify if something like it exists) - all part of the plan to make an environment that doesn't have to look like a lab all of the time. Not sure that is possible, but I'm giving it a go!

When I was in Auckland the other week, the SCA Volvo Ocean team had this 3m high Lego model.

Everything worked except it didn't float, and was made from over 100,000 off the shelf pieces.

Expect a lot of Lego stuff here for example the base of Shabaz's robot or even half the "Actors" in Shabaz's movie segments ...in fact anything that Shabaz has an hand in will in some part contribute to the Danish GDP!!!

I don't know about Peter Pan and Tinkerbell but I'm sure I saw some Lego Minions at the toy store - it needs investigating!

Lego Monsters Inc would be very cool...
