Home labs of electronics engineers?

tin_xdevs
tin_xdevs over 10 years ago

Or should I say more, caves? That's what volt-nutting can bring you into:

Home lab

Most of gear was saved from scrapping by repairs. Collected stuff over last 5 years or so. DMM collection quickly grew after getting into precision DC voltage obsessions, with voltage references and such.

Total list of gear as by today:

6 x Keithley 2001 DMM (2 still need some repairs)

1 x Keithley 2002

1 x Keithley 2000 (not shown here)

1 x Keithley 2400 SMU

1 x Keithley 2510 TEC SMU

HP 4263B (LCR Meter)

HP 33120A ARB 15MHz

Tektronix CSA7404 with pair of P7380 probes  TCA-1MEGTCA-1MEG some P6245's

Tektronix TLA714 with TLA7AA4 and set of probes (P6810, 2 x P6860, some mictor adapters, etc)

EDC MV106 DC Voltage standard (+-30ppm)

Few selfmade LM399 and Linear LTZ1000 stable references

ESI DB52 decade resistor

ERSA ICON1 soldering iron

Bunch of Vishay Precision Group 0.2ppm resistors for testing/calibration.

Well I was brave enough to share my junk LAB way back so here is the new and improved version and through the door to the right is my workstation (A little messy) Yes thats a PI 2 on the desk with full…

Hi Illya, Wow, What a beautiful concentration of precision. It looks like you have a variety of projects in the works too. I have recently up graded my shop area in the basement. It is always a work in…

I'd like to see this at the Smithsonian (among a lot of other things, natch). They've recreated Ralph Baer's home workshop as an exhibition, and his original Brown Box console prototypes are there too…

Yes there isn't much doubt that on some level OCD and I are good friends.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, if you can make it work to your advantage :-D

And clearly you have, judging by that pristine workshop!

I spoke with Baer on multiple occasions, and he was a really nice guy; sharp as a flint right up to the end, and still hacking and inventing.

I didn't know anything about Ralph Baer, but I just now read the Wikipedia entry. I was playing with a 'Simon' game in a toy store with the nephew just last week. I didn't realize he had created it.

And finally I now realise why the Magnavox Odyssey had the distinctive wood trim - presumably because Ralph Baer's prototypes too had a similar finish!

It must have been fun discussing things with him!

Also I recognize the familiar yellow-with-blue-stripe Texas Instruments TTL databooks on the bookshelf ; ) They were great.

Everyone's workbench says something about them. Loved both Jan Sir's and John Sir's bench.

Would love a glimse of the man cave of fvan , Workshopshed, mark bekett and Robert Peter Oakes

I would ask shabaz but that would just be too much IMHO(IoT Berlin?)

Mine's not really set up for electronics so my "clean room" is the kitchen table. Here's a fairly recent picture before I finished fixing the armoured cabling and sockets.

From left to right you can see, pillar drill with selection of vices, grinder, mini anvil, Prazi MD200 lathe and an angle grinder stand which I've still not tried out and swivel vice.

Freshly varnished birdbox painted by my daughter handing from the ceiling.

All of the benches and storage you see, I've made.

Here's the workshop shortly after I put the new roof on. It's double skinned with insulation, multiwall polycarbonate for skylight. Two layers of felt on top to keep the rain out. Single phase power runs from the house.

    image

Test equipment is kind of limited to a multimeter (below) and whatever LEDs I have to hand.

These are the images of my lab / working place. Something like a "blob" that has invaded all the home image

    image

Here is the table 1 image where I play hardware, some testings and now it is harmed to manage a couple of developments over embedded printing

    image

And this is the table 2, derived from an Ikea sofa where there is the Meditech testing and assembling...

    image

Here is the USS Enterprise main platform. From here me and my wife control the live of all the island image

    image

... and then the outside, where the dirty work is done image

    Hope you enjoy. Enrico

    Hi Inderpreet,

IoT in Berlin is underway, it will feature a lab with a very unique window view - that's all I can say ; ) Photos to come later. It will really encourage productivity. Officially opening soon.

My home lab is small and dispersed across three places - a small garage for power tools, a storage room (which I am losing and need to completely vacate because others wish to use it) and a room for actual work which contains the majority of the equipment I use on a regular basis. I'll try to take some photos soon. The garage is a mess, but at least it looks "busy".

That is mainly because he doesn't really sleep and has so much on the go.

It was tidier than mine is .....

Hi Mark, it was great to meet up! I hope you're enjoying your work this week. Regarding sleep (lack of) well, these are exciting times! The problem is tea/coffee only works for a few days at a time...
