Help with PS3 power supply

Currently have a PS3 with a non-functional power supply (EADP-220BB) the output on molex connector is 5v just as it should be, however the 2 larger pins supposed to be putting out 12v, are not. I was looking for advice on how to further trouble shoot to find the broken component and possibly repair it.

 

I realize the replacements are available in the 20-30$ range, but this is more of a learning and experience effort. If I buy a new one and pop it in I learn nothing.

Any help or tips would be appreciated. thank you in advance.

    Hi Daniel,

     

    This is a switching power supply and it will have dangerous voltages inside. They also usually present a challenge to find and fix problems. When I went to the web to identify the Model EADP-220BB I found this video on you-tube that talks about how to repair this supply.

    If you decide to go inside the power supply keep in mind the danger of shock or electrocution.

    First thing is safety.

    Most switch mode supplies take the mains input (110/230v) and rectify it.

    This results in 200/400vDC being present on a fairly large value capacitor.

    It can take some time for this to dissapate if there is no load.

    If you are unable to measure it, then wait for an hour or two.

     

     

    The DC is then 'chopped' into the necessary voltages ie 12v and 5v.

    Many of the problems are due to dried out capacitors, which affects the 'chopping'.

    Sometimes there are tell tale signs like bulging or discharge.

    Everything has a life, and many are only 1000hrs, which is quickly used up if they are left on.

     

    The usual trick is to replace most of the capacitors with the proper type (often 105deg with low ESR).

    I've rarely found the large Mains filter (usually a 40-100uF 400v rated) to be defective, and the others are usually under $2 each.

     

    I suspect if you do some searching someone will have dropped a schematic on the net, this will help a lot.

    Thank you both for the quick reply. I will check everything out. I did leave the unit Unplugged for 24 hours after testing and before handling, just to be sure most if not all voltage was drained from capacitors. I also do notice a small burn mark under one of the smaller, lower load capacitors. I will check it out further. Again, thank you for the help!
