Heat Transfer Press platen is not working

Former Member

I'm open to any and all suggestions on how to trouble shoot this problem.

I have a Heat transfer Transfer press that I purchased off of Ebay.

Unit is 220V 30 amps

It is a OEM Geo. Knight 20X25 Digital swinger originally manufactured with only a top heated platen

This unit was highly modified by a 3rd party who added a lower heated platen and very sophisticated electronic system that holds a very close temp. tolerances.

It appears that it was modified for use by 3M in Mexico.

I do not have any schematics for this unit

I'm using the equipment for an R & D project.

I had been using the equipment which was working perfectly and had to put it in storage for a year, (hot & humid in South Florida)

I retreived the unit from storage and had to dismantle it to move it and reassemble it.

Now the upper heated platen does not heat.

The OEM is saying that the the ohms across the contacts on the heated platen should be 11 ohms (which checks out).

It doesn't appear that the heated platen is bad. (I'll have an electrician double check this today).

The unit appears to have dual systems one for the upper heated platen (not working) and one for the lower heated platen,(working perfectly)

On the front of the unit there are 2 Watlow 93 temperature contollers 1 for the upper platen and 1 for the lower platen.

Could I use the electrical values from the lower Watlow 93 unit (because it is working perfectly) to cross reference and trouble shoot the upper Watlow 93 (which is not working).

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

It appears that one of the heat shielded cables that run from a terminal in the swing head to the heated platen was broken .

The cable was buried inside a heat shield wrapped around a fibergalss braid shield with high temp. plastic insulation over the wire.

It was giving intermittent readings depending on how it was moved.

Somehow at some point in time it looks like the cable was pinched and then during use eventually broke, as there was no evidence of burns from a short.
