Plasma TV Trouble

In the last couple months the family TV, a Toshiba Plasma, has taken to making a snapping noise from time to time. As it didn't seem to affect the performance I cringed but just kept watching. Tonight it made a particularly nasty crack and afterwards the picture quality was degenerated with contrast and color problems. It was obvious that something was wrong so I turned it off and plan to open it tomorrow to see if I can locate the arc path. If anyone has any experience with Plasma TV's and recognizes this condition I would appreciate some insights.

    No idea of an exact problem, but Plasma equal high temperature and 2 problems, capacitors drying up or dry solder joints. Mine recent failed and easy repair with solder joints dry. This on the PSU was caused I suspect to the high heat generated making the solder go through a stage that crystallised.

    Hi Malcolm,

    After taking it apart and searching for any arcing damage I found some questionable areas on the ZSUS board. All the other boards looked fine. I ordered the ZSUS board on line and when it arrived I reassembled the TV. The picture was beautiful, at least half of it. Now unfortunately half of the screen was full of vertical lines. I took it apart again and put my old board back in. Same problem with the vertical lines appeared so I must have damaged a different board in the inspection process or I made a bad connection. I once again stripped the set down and reassembled it making sure all the connectors were properly seated. I put the new ZSUS board back into the set and tested it. This time I had a beautiful clear full picture. My wife and I struggled to get this 50kg beast back on its shelf and she sat down to watch a little TV. I was very happy. My happiness was short lived, however, as an hour later she called to me telling me that the original bad picture was back. Ouch! Actually I said something more like @#%$*&.

    Tomorrow its "Go Shopping for a New TV Day". I am glad at least one of us had good luck with our repairs.

    Plasmas are very hot devices. I will go as far as changing capacitor and re soldering dry joints but some faults are just not worth it.

     

    They are old technology now so LED is the way to go. I am sure that once my packs it in and i have to replace a board it will go. Fortunately i have a smaller LED TV here as well i can easily change with until ready to buy another one.

     

    BTW Dry Joints can be very difficult to locate. It took me a while to locate the ones in mine. I have to use my microscope to look.
