Today I came across a breadboard with the name "MB102 Type Solderless Breadboard." I had not heard of an "MB102" before, or I never noticed it, which sent me down a rabbit hole.

It appears the name is common for the style pictured above. A friend pointed to the one below as MB101.

Ultimately, I'm wondering where the name came from? For example, do the letters and numbers mean something?
For example:
- MBXXY could mean
- MB = Mechanical Board (??)
- XX = number of column contacts
- Y = rows of terminal contacts
With a sample size of two, that seems to fit.
Does anyone know more about this name/style number?
