For solderless breadboards, where did the name/type "MB102" come from?

Today I came across a breadboard with the name "MB102 Type Solderless Breadboard." I had not heard of an "MB102" before, or I never noticed it, which sent me down a rabbit hole.

MB102 Breadboard Example

It appears the name is common for the style pictured above. A friend pointed to the one below as MB101.

MB101 Breadboard Example

Ultimately, I'm wondering where the name came from? For example, do the letters and numbers mean something?

For example:

  • MBXXY could mean
  • MB = Mechanical Board (??)
  • XX = number of column contacts
  • Y = rows of terminal contacts

With a sample size of two, that seems to fit. Slight smile

Does anyone know more about this name/style number?

    Here is a WAG (wildassguess)...

    MBXXY

    MultiBus (XX=# contacts/bus column - usually 10) (Y=# rows of busses)

power busses are not in the number

If this is the convention, it is pretty loosely adhered to.

    It works on  MB102, MB104, MB106, MB108

It doesn't exactly work on MB101, MB701, MB107, MB611, MB830 although in these cases it is obvious what they did or why they deviated.
