Tenma 21-10115 soldering station

Hi all,

 

looking to replace an old soldering station with a newer model and currently researching possible alternatives.  I noticed this very reasonably priced Tenma model sold by Farnell http://uk.farnell.com/tenma/21-10115-uk/soldering-station-60w-220v-uk/dp/2064549?MER=bn_para_1TP_Echo_2

 

Have been reading mixed reviews and watched this video which appears to show the same station under the Atten brand name, it appears to only have 3 wires going to the iron, supply and earth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRb1_DB234Q So curious how the temperature can be controlled accurately if this is the case Or does the Tenma  21-1011521-10115 have extra wires for temperature sensing

    That is quite a good price for a temperature controlled iron as you say. At that price, useful as a backup iron too if you one day upgrade even further.

    I remember looking at a schematic of some other iron a while back, and it too had two wires, and it sensed temperature by measuring the resistance of the iron during brief off periods (the resistance changes with temperature) by passing a small current through it. This is a low-cost but definitely a valid solution to temperature sensing, so I'd expect something similar for your iron if it only has two wires.

    I have and use a Tenma  21-794521-7945 It is barely worth the cost(which I forget The cage that holds the Soldering Iron keeps coming out of its slot on the base It don't seem to be Hot enough compared to a Weller Soldering Station that I had for 30 years b/f it finally Died five years ago I would go for a Weller the next time despite Higher Cost

    Hi Edward,

     

    That's good feedback. Were the fixes easy, or are they showstopper design flaws? That price bracket (£35) is very low, it doesn't leave many temperature controlled options without stepping up in money significantly.

    I too would rather save and get a better iron. For a lab we spec'd low-end Metcals which were "fairly" low cost but are still £150 each.

    USCDADNYC reply>> The solder-iron Holding-Cage was one Piece Bent-Metal. I slipped on Insulation from large Gauge Wire, then wedged the piece back into its slot in the Base. In my almost 40 yr old Weller solder Station, the cage terminated in a Loop. The Loop was held down by a wing-nut onto a threaded post protruding from the Weller Base. A much better design, but You Get What You Pay For. As being a Showstopper? Yes, if I knew then, what I know now. Nothing worse than holding a Hot Iron and not having a place to put it down.
