The Rough, Rugged, and Covered in Mud Wishlist!

Our Favorite Tools for Engineers in the Wild!

Not all jobs can be done from the comfort of the lab. Engineers often have to venture outdoors and brave the elements, working on devices that are exposed to mud, wind, and sun, or even submerged! This wishlist explores some of the devices that are tough enough to keep up, although bear in mind, most will not survive a plunge into water!

Rough and Rugged Wishlist Giveaway

Answer the question below for a chance to win an Outdoor Rock Speaker!

What's your toughest tool has been through wars in your hands?

multitool of course - mine is somewhat worn-out, but those brand-named seem too good-looking for actual use...

Thanks a lot! If only tariq.ahmad decides to run planned animal-themed project, I could use this as base of my squirrel repelling system I plan to build to protect my walnut three from excessive theft  Slight smile

Thank you, colporteur.  Your Romex stripper reminded me of something I've carried in my pocket since 1982.  It's a flat blade screwdriver and a 1/2" / 13mm wrench.
Oh... and it also opens up bottles.

By my estimation this tool has been in my tool chest since 1988. I call it a Romex wire stripper. I did google search for the name but got a number of hits of other types of wire stripper.

14/2 electrical wire is inserted into the hole at one end and the tools tooth blade at the other end cuts the outer insulation when pulled back, without damaging the inner conductors. My step father suggested I purchase the tool when I was wiring the basement in my first home. I recall it cost less than $2. It's value far exceeds that. If you ever have cause to run house hold wiring I highly recommend the tool to save installation time. Oh and the skin on knuckles when you have to cut wire installation.

I've told my son-in-law he can take it from my tool chest when I pass on to the place of perpetual light. Seems I won't need the tool to do wiring there.

My trusty Klein crimping /cutting tool. When I first started in AV installations my coworker said "get yourself a good pair of dikes (which is not the accurate term for these but oh well) and if they're Klein's, they'll last forever." I have cut metal, plastic, all kinds of things they weren't meant for, and they keep on trucking. I hit them with some white lithium grease about twice a year and they are simply a pleasure to use. I like using bell crimps rather than wire nuts for most applications so these work great for me.

I opt for drone. It is very useful to provide an bird eye view for doing survey of the surroundings for outdoor engineering project.

Like surveying for stream and remote water level sensor installed for water management SCADA. i suppose in the future, such monitoring function can even be autonomous and a fleet of drones inspect remote weather station, water level sensor stations in the mountains. It is more efficient than human who need much longer time to cover the inspection by hiking. A drone like below easily cover 5km range and can fly 30 minutes

shown below is using the drone to survey Mengkuang dam. Of course, other than work, this can be used for outdoor activity like photo taking and path finding

    imagedamimage

the drone is attached to a phone for easy navigation and control. its camera comes with gimbal with superior image stabilization. It also features a go home function if remote control signal losts.

    image

This is a 249g drone. It is not 250g because for 250g one need to register with the civil aviation authority. in this phone, we have flown to the highest point which is 120m from where we are standing. Our starting point is roughly at 400m + from sea level.
