WiMAX Vs. LTE

I agree that the larger carriers in western  countries will choose LTE for 4G networks, but the roll out of LTE is not due to be at a full  run rate until 2012. WiMAx is ready now and with a recent standards upgrade is  on par, speed wise, with LTE.

 

Can those countires who want to jump straight to 4g (India, Chian ect) hold out for LTE, which is more expensive, or will they plump for  WiMAX, as Mexico already have?

  • The world economic situation may be the great equalizer. It is hugely expensive to roll out 4G networks of any kind, and so many countries (India and China included) may well be pushing back their original timetables for launching 4G. If they do, then the current advantage WiMax has may disappear and LTE gets the 2-3 development/rollout years they need. By the time customers are ready to resume spending at pre-recession levels it could be an even fight.

    That should solve the development/rollout problem. They may also have to fix the price differential, which is quite possible with a couple of years to work on it. I suppose it depends a lot on the countries themselves, if they feel now is the time to start rolling out for customers to resume spending. A catalyst is often all that is needed to restart spending, and 4g could be it
  • ...maybe it was a catalyst for Mexico where Clearwire have just announce plans for a 23 city WiMAX netowrk....umm 1-0 WiMAX....
