project. need help and advice from all the expert here .

hi,

 

 

im a student and currently i am doing a project in a hospital to remind everyone to wash their hands, my group came up with 2 ideas, RFID and/or sensors which is integrated with the hand rub which act as a switch to verify hand rub have been done.

 

firstly,

 

 

 

RFID,we could not figure out how much is would cost and how it works. it is because we need to ensure EVERY staff to wash their hands as these doctors tends to forgot and did not bother to wash their hands, and also in the other hand, we want everyone to do also as there are also visitors. cost is an issue and RF might affect the patient health? and is the programming long?

 

 

 

sensor, we could not figure out how to place the sensors as there will be people moving around and could not determine if the person has already washed their hand. but sensors are much cheaper comparing to the RFID..

 

need ideas and advice from everyone here.. i really could not think of other way to deal with the sensors.. please help me!

    Usually in hospitals 868MHz and 2.4GHz ranges are approved for usage.

    This taken into consideration UHF passive RFID tags could be used but the readers are expensive.

     

    Tags can be cheap but the readers and the reading range can be an issue if you need to keep the cost low.

     

    Hopefully this helps at least a bit.

    UHF readers are usually available from around 300€ upwards, depending on the reading range and type of a reader.

     

    Cheapest RFID readers (starting from around 70€ or something like that) are available for 125kHz passive tags but the read range is only some centimeters and the required antennas for more range need to be very large (eg. 60cm).

     

    If you also want the sensor data to be used in some way you would need a custom RF solution or possibly to hook into an existing WLAN/ethernet in the hospital.

    This is an interesting problem that requires some innovative thinking....  I do not believe wireless is the answer.   You need to look at the root cause of the problem and determine a solution.

     

    What you have said is that the medical staff would forget to wash their hands.   I do not completely agree that trained medical professionals would forget such a basic rule.....   But lets put that argument aside right now and assume this is just a theoretical discussion.   What you need to do is find a way for everyone to remember to wash their hands.  People are creatures of a habit so if you force someone too far from their comfort zone you will not get much success.   The solution must be within everyone's comfort zone in order to work.

     

    Using this theory the solution should be easily found.   All staff members in a hospital must all follow security protocols as part of working in the hospital.   I assume the hospital is question has a security program.   You can use the security badge as a reminder system to wash your hands.

     

    All you need to do is put a card reader by the sink and instruct the staff to swipe their security card every time they wash their hands.   Monitoring the system is very simple all you need to do is to program a simple timeout alarm that the security staff monitors.

     

    The cost of this system is only time to program the security system and the cost of a card reader. Any security professional should easily be able to design and program this system within a day.

    yes.. data shows that 8000 patients died of infection due to hand washing problems. they tends to forget due to rushing environment.

     

     

     

    hmm.. to swipe? i will think of that.. still need to rethink..haha

    Chris, while using the existing keycards would be a good idea, it would be better to keep the "reading" no-contact process to also improve hygiene and to reduce the possibility of bacterial growth on the devices.

     

    When you swipe the card you will either do it with dirty hands or you grab the card with clean hands and risk transfers from the card itself.

     

    They should also remeber to disinfect the card.

     

    But that is just my two (euro)cents image

    I wonder want to know if tyou are pretending this product as a massive one The question is in order you to spend resources there is a good chance to do with freescale has a SiP system in Packcage that mix an MCU and a transceiver it might help you a lot because you can read analog and digital sensors among to transmit the results to your own receiver There is a lot of solutions you may get enter freescale.com and search MC13192 and  MC13213MC13213 I use them both with excellent results
