I don't think the 8255 was ever available except in a 40 pin package (I don't know if ANYTHING was available in a 26 pin package!) A more modern equivalent is the CMOS version: the 82C55; this is still a very old chip, and modern vendors (Farnell/Newark included) don't seem to have stock, but some of the vendors with more history in the hobbyist market seem to still have them (both Digikey and JameCo claim to be able to ship immediately.)
