GPS modem interfacing with controllers

Former Member

Hi,

I am a student and I plan on making a final year project. I am trying to connect a controller to a mobile device using a wireless connection. I have no ideea what kind of wireless module to use. Are there some kind of GPS modems that can do this task? I am planning on transfering large data if possible. Maybe a GPRS or EDGE connection can be realized some how.

I have also heard about some long distance wireless kits ( can go up to 7km). Can these be connected to my smartphone/PDA?I know these are using 802.15 protocol while the phone WiFi is 802.11g.

    Alexandru,

Would something like this board be any use to you? http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/391311.pdf

    Hi Ally,

It is exactly what I intend to do but I plan on making it myself because I can not affort spending 500 euros on it.

But thank you for your suggestion

Sorry for the late entry, but this can be done pretty cheaply.  Here's how.

First, you can pick up a SIM900D GSM/GPRS cell module for under $30US.  Any GSM/GPRS module will work because they all use the same AT commands.

Next, you can use a small microcontroller to grab the data from the GPS module and use the built in TCP/IP stack in the modem to send it anywhere you want.

Optionally, if you don't want to mess with the microcontroller, you can use a chip from ConnectOne.  The made TCP/IP routing engines for embedded apps.  Simply connect the GPS device to a serial port, configure the CO chip as a SerialNET device, connect the modem to another port and you are good to go.  The SerialNET mode will basically open a TCP connection to an IP address you choose and send any data from the GPS serial port to that address as streaming bytes.

In the end, you spend $30 on the GPRS module, $38 on a pre-packaged ConnectOne module (based on the CO2128 chip, you can buy them from Mouser), and $30 on a GPS module.  The total cost is $98US or 70 Euros.  Not bad.

I am current working on a project using all of these devices and would be more than happy to help if I can.

    Regards,
