Help to build a wireless beacon!

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

I am a not an engineer but I have a product idea which I would like to build that involves the idea of a wireless beacon. I am not sure if there are engineers (for hire) or companies that can create a product based on an idea you have to build it? Would appreciate any recommendations.

Meanwhile, the idea I have is for a small (lighter / pager) size wireless beacon that must be run on a battery and is able to connect to a network (ie. phone or pager) independently upon power on.

All help will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds interesting, what sort of range did you have in mind for transmission, what sort of message are you intending to transmit? I am happy to help with initial research and have the resources to build a prototype if you wish...image

Hi David, I am not sure. I would presume it would need to be detectable / communicate through the existing network built. Kinda like how ipad / iphone has the locate your phone function through 3G or wifi except this is a persistent beacon that will never shut down. so whoever has the beacon on hand is locatable. Is it possible?

Hi, Yes it is possible!...In fact there are many products out there that 'do something similar'...For instance there is SPOT Connect a device which you can use to send an SOS by GPRS every 5 minutes or connect to social network sites from practically anywhere in the world. The device can also connect to any bluetooth device such as a smartphone.

As Cabe said the requirements will help us to advise you further, as a designer I would be looking at a small low power GPS/GPRS/Bluetooth module with a microcontroller....maybe...
