Power after your done

I have just finished my first project. So I thought I would watch the fruits of my labor. I was told that I could plug in a 5v transformer a d the chip would remember my skit and start working.

Well I plugged it in and the LEDs on the UNO lit up but nothing else happened. I unplugged the transformed and plugged the computer back in. I thought I would reload the program. But before I even opened the program it started working.

Can I use the UNO without a computer or am I tethered for life?

Are you powering it off of a computer USB port?
If so, that might be where your power issues are. Although a PC USB port is supposed to supply 5V @ 500mA, it might be sharing that power with other peripherals.

I recommend getting an external 5V power supply, like one for a cell phone. Find some USB to USB adapters to get to the right connector size.

Sorry to kill your suggestion but you have it backwards. It works fine when I use the computer USB port. It's when I hook it up to a 5 v power supply that doesn't work. I was told I might need 9v. And to use a 9v transformer battery. Is that true or will I let the smoke out of my arduino?

Yes, you need a higher voltage. The UNO can take 7 to 12V, recommended. So, 9V should work just fine (around 400mA or more).
Again, find a power supply that can handle it. They are plentiful.
