RF Power Amplifier

Hi All ,

Being an FPGA Design Engineer i have limited insight into RF Circuits and how they behave , i am trying to increase the range of a RF Transciever build around CC430F6137 by using a RF Power Amplifier .

But i am not sure how to connect it , the RF output of CC430 is differential and then TI recommends a Balun CKT infront of it and it terminates on a Antenna .

The RF Power Amplifier only takes in single input and single output , should i connect the PA after the Balun CKT ???

Please see the diagram attached .

Thanking you ,

If the circuit is a transceiver (and not a transmitter) then it is not possible to just connect an amplifier. You need some switching capability, often achieved by biasing special diodes. See here (PDF) . However this requires the ability to know when the transceiver is transmitting, so that the switching can be invoked. You may be better off asking the manufacturer (TI) directly for recommendations. You can't just use relays by the way (well, you could, but they

    would be very expensive relays).

OK, then lets say i just want to transmit for now , referring to the diagram attached can i connect the PA like this ?

And do i still have to add a impledence matching CKT before antenna ?

    For Tx/Rx switching i am considering RF6504

    The PA's i am considering is RF5110G

    Thanks

It's fine as long as you can control your CC430 device (which I'm not familiar with, hence the strong recommendation that you direct your question to TI) to output at a level which won't overload the PA (1dBm level max or thereabouts). You will likely need to do impedance matching, which can be accomplished in a variety of ways, e.g. a network or wideband matching with a transformer. The matching is required if the CC430 impedance is different to the PA.
