    Bill.

Thank you for your comment. But I want to make sure I understand them.

Yes, you have to log in to element14. so, you have to register and be a member. That's true for most of your programs.

Then you say: "...login to get the marks and it drops all the answers and doesn't give a mark..."

I'm not sure I understand that. If you take the quiz and mark your answers, at the bottom you will see an orange button that says "Mark quiz." A box will pop up and give you your grade (or mark).

If you do the quiz as a guest (cancelling the logon pop-up that appears at each question)

and then only log on when you hit the 'Mark quiz' button, the interface resets all the answer selections you submitted whilst as a guest user forcing you to start over.

I tested out what I said. True. But from our point of view, all our programs are for members and you need to be logged in. If someone wants to do something and is not a member and not logged in, you will of course be prompted to log in or register.

I don't think that having to be logged in to get the badge is necessarily being questioned here - it is more the case that the user interface resets the answer selections when you do log in.

I guess a user interface analogy might be that of a web page shopping basket where you may not want to create a user account until you are sure everything you want is in stock and that the price is right. However, if you do decide you want to go ahead with the purchase, then you would typically want the contents of the current basket to remain in place rather than being emptied and having to start over.

A related issue can occur if the site quietly logs you out after you have started the quiz, as you only realise this when you reach the 'Mark Quiz' button and it throws up a log-in to continue box and wipes all your answer selections in the process. If I recall correctly, in this situation you don't get the login prompts per question.

I suspect most community members will already be logged in whilst participating in the quiz and never experience this, however if the quizzes are being promoted on social networking sites, then the new user experience may be different.

I see what you are saying now.

I presume that it's set up that way is because community participation is monitored because it tells us about the the activity on the community, which is important to managing it well. To monitor participation, one needs to be logged in. I think your analogy to ecommerce is apt, but I'm not sure it would be useful because if someone wants to participate, they need to be a member first, and log in. Anyway, thanks for the observations.
