Mushrooms' Paradise #4. System design

The whole Mushrooms' Paradise blog

I plan to use Raspberry PI and ESP 32 as controlling devices - the brains of the project; Enviro for temperature and humidity sensors, humidifier, 4 soil moisture sensors for vegetables part of enclosure, 4 fans for ventilation, 4 water pumps for irrigation, several LED strips as growing light.

RPI will control Enviro, fans and humidifier. ESP 32 will control the soil moisture sensors and pumps. ESP 32 will communicate with the PI using MQTT.

Optionally (if I will be able to figure out how to do it) I want to store all the important indicators like sensor values, start of pumping, start of humidifier with timestamps in Influx DB on RPI and send the data to ThingSpeak server, so the most important sensors can be monitored from any device.

Below is a diagram of the design.

Blue - brains of the project

Green - components

Gray - optional

Nice approach. Love the use of MQTT. Aren't you going to use the automation HAT ? Still following with very interest !

I have a plan A, and if it will not work - a plan B image

For plan A I am not going to use Automation HAT at all. I have all the sensors I need built in into Enviro, and other 4 moisture sensors will be connected to ESP 32.

There is a possibility it will not work though, because my enclosure is an old metal fridge with only one side open and covered with transparent plastic. So WiFi might not work.

In this case - plan B - connect both Automation HAT and Enviro to RPI (I saw a great post from @Davor on how to do it Aquaponics Box: #2 - Hacking the HATs (both HATs from the challenger kit on single RPi) but I am trying to avoid it)
