The Challenge

The element14 Community are pleased to introduce the “1 Meter Of Pi” Design Challenge, with Raspberry Pi.

As your rocket ship blasts into space, speeding to Mars, you have 1m3 of space to grow your food and nutrients for the journey. Resources are limited, and you need to make it work!

Luckily, your friends at the element14 Community have provided 20 successful applicants with a Raspberry Pi 4 2GBRaspberry Pi 4 2GB, a Pimoroni PIM487 Automation HAT, PIM486 Enviro HAT, and a PICO HAT Hacker PCB to help them prepare their 1m3 builds. You have 10 weeks to save your crew.

This could be the 1m3 of space on your rocket, or it could be used to feed the masses or in an urban setting to help feed the needy during a global disaster.

20 successful applicants will get the Challenge Kit free of charge to build and blog their project.

For a chance to win one of the prizes, you must blog about your build process, the final outcome of your challenge kit project, and keep your project within a VERY strict 1m3 of space. In space, no one can hear you scream ... about this constraint.

All projects will include a form of vertical, urban, or enclosed farming. Your aim is to add a twist in your project that will set it apart from the other competitors.

Example applications could include:

  • Zero G Enclosure
  • Entirely Self-contained System
  • Edible Algae System
  • Electronic Planting and Picking
  • High Growth Density
  • Robotic Pest Management

imageApply to join the Design Challenge and receive a badge and points for applying! Make sure you've thought your application through, made it original and your own work. If you are building upon someone else's work, make sure you cite your sources. Direct copies of work will not be accepted.
imagePost your first blog! We expect updates on how your Design Challenge project is going, so don't hold back, tell us your thoughts, difficulties, and how you're progressing. Remember you're assessed based upon your updates, and don't be afraid - other challengers and members are there to help you with any problems you have, and it helps the staff to keep an eye on you!
image10 blogs! Wow, has it really been that long? We hope you'll keep us updated about your project at least once a week, for 10 weeks. We'll not be impressed if you only put a one-liner in there, that's what messages are for. Blogs are to make sure you're giving us all of the juicy detail, trials and tribulations of what's going on, and it keeps everyone honest!
imageEven if you're not a challenger in the Design Challenge, we appreciate every member who joins in and gives a helping hand to applicants and members. If your messages are found to be helpful, we want to acknowledge that and reward you!
