    Yes, I have used those, I like how they thread in using an Allen key. Actually thinking back it was those I used for the grinder, not captive nuts.

    Have you seen this range of thread inserts for wood.

    http://www.edlfast.co.nz/products/index.php/nuts.html?cat=3427

     

    They come on various size threads from M4 to M8.

    The unflanged have not lip so can be wound down below the surface.

    I also used some larger ones to clamp my grinder to the bench with some large bolts, it avoids the need to get a spanner into tight spaces and they can be thinner than regular nuts.
