  • Congratulations to the challangers. I submitted a last minute proposal and didn't have time to think of convincing enough solution.
    Looking forward to the blogs. I'm particularly interested and hope to see some tests on the high speed capabilities of the MAX40080.
    Seems like it can sample up to 1 Msps and possibly can capture some current transients in detail. Open mouth

    Sensor is sensing at high speed but output speed is limited by I2C speed. See datasheet for more details, calculations and limits. TLDR version is that chip can communicate at super fast 3.4 MHz I2C, but very few constrollers supports this. Even on Raspberry Pi it will be very tricky to configure I2C controller to run on this speed. You cant read more than about 60k samples over I2C (60k is maximum at 2.88 MHz I2C bus calculated in datasheet at page 34). High sampling rate is used for averaging (digital filter) multiple samples (up to 128) to one output. Datasheet contains much more calcualtions and estimations about this, but RAW 1 MSPS is definaly impossible to get from this.

    It would be nice to see some details. I think that even with filtering enabled some details could be seen but main purpose of this chip is to monitor long term average consumption. It has some peak related features like comparators which can analyze every of 1 milion samples per second, but this in-chip feature and it is hard to get all of these measured values out of this due to serial bus choice.

    Oh yes I didn't think about it. Indeed the datasheet does have a nice chart. 60ksps will be the fastest for real-time streaming of data.

    Nevertheless, there are some features that may still make it work, like comparators you mentioned. Perhaps the last 64 samples can be saved upon detecting a current transient. But at 1 Msps it would mean only 64us worth Thinking

    I'm hoping to capture some high-speed transients with my project. Don't know how much success I'll have though.
