Experiment With Inductor : RF Harvesting

Introduction

The ever-increasing use of wireless devices, such as mobile phones, computing, and remote sensing systems, have led to increased demand and dependence on the use of batteries. One of the market challenges is the potential reduction of large batteries and new power management systems to improve device efficiency. One possibility is to extract energy from the environment to recharge a battery or to directly power the electronic device. RF energy harvesting uses the idea of capturing transmitted electromagnetic waves and storing them for later use. In this experiment I will try different Inductor and see how it will impact the energy amount energy production.

Circuit

The above circuit is intended to use for this experiment to harvest RF energy. The antenna, capacitor and rectifier diode will stay constant for this experiment while the inductor will be vary. The DC output will be measure using the provided multimeter from the kit.

Materials

For this experiment, I am going to use the following antenna from this kit https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081BD4KG7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 . This is your typical antenna that is inside an wireless charger. From research, the antenna are optimize to receive/transmit rf signal.

For the rectifier diode, I am going to use the SMS7630-061 RF diode. These diode low current threshold which are ideal in RF harvesting circuit since the amount of energy circuit get going be low generally.

As oppose to the diode and antenna, the capacitor is not as important in this circuit so can be anything as long as it reasonable. So i decided to chose 47uF 25V Electrolytic Capacitor. This might be change in the future, but this is the current capacitor for now.

It will be interesting to see what you can achieve with this arrangement. My experience with energy harvesting was that the amount of energy captured was so small that the analogue side of the electronics…

You are only using a half-wave rectifier in your circuit, would you not be able to harvest more power by switching to full-wave rectification? Good luck with your experiments.

    Kind regards

It will be interesting to see what you can achieve with this arrangement. My experience with energy harvesting was that the amount of energy captured was so small that the analogue side of the electronics had to be really good. Being a mostly digital/microprocessor person I was just not able to make it work. I hope you do better.
