The full press release can be read by clicking here.
A big thank you to all who participated in the In the Air IoT Design Challenge, the partners, element14 and the wider public have been deeply impressed by the projects we've seen to help create a greener, cleaner world.
It was not an altogether straightforward matter to pick a winner: however, in the end, we've awarded the prizes to the following individuals and their projects.
The Grand Prize
The Grand Prize has gone to Christever del Rosario of New Zealand for his Carbon Footprint Monitoring System.  His project's final summary can be read by clicking here.
image
Christever will receive:
  1. 15 inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display
  2. U1273A OLED Multimeter from Keysight
  3. SimpleLinkTm Bluetooth SmartRegistered/Multi-Standard SensorTag (Manufacturer Number: CC2650STK)
Community Choice Winner
The Community Choice Winner by a clear plurality of votes was Inderpreet Singh of India for his Firecracker Aftermath Analyzer.  His project's final summary can be read by Clicking here.
image
Inderpreet will receive:
  1. 13 inch MacBook Air
  2. SimpleLinkTm Bluetooth SmartRegistered/Multi-Standard SensorTag (Manufacturer Number: CC2650STK)
Additionally, we felt that two other projects deserved recognition as Honourable Mentions; both engineers will receive a SimpleLinkTm Bluetooth SmartRegistered/Multi-Standard SensorTag as a prize.
Honourable Mention 1
Our first Honourable Mention goes to Ambrogio Galbusera of Italy for his AirMobile project. The project summary can be found by clicking here.
Honourable Mention 2
Our second Honourable Mention goes to Janis Alnis of Latvia for his Air Quality Monitoring In School Classes project.  The project summary can be found by clicking here.
Thank you once again to all the participants for their time, energy and effort: we look forward to more innovative and exciting design challenges in 2015 coming to life.

On a technical level I thought Christever, Ambrogio and Janis did a fantastic job designing their solutions, as did Inderpreet, Dragan, Frederick and others and I hope they will continue to develop their…

I totally don't agree with you Dragan... many compliments for sure to xever and janisalnis, but it's quite frustrating to see (after so many nights spent soldering and debugging) some other people who win with so few efforts...

I agree with you Ambrogio, the weekly blog rule is not being enforced even though it is clearly stated in the rules. Why should people keep bothering making such big efforts (and sacrifices) if it doesn't matter at the end ?

We are presently experimenting with other blogging models in two instances - the first was in the Internet of Holiday Lights where we had a minimum target, that worked quite well.  The second is in Sudden Impact: we've changed the model in that instance.

We'll continue to experiment with various models: we won't always satisfy everyone.  We do appreciate the efforts everyone has put in and we do our best to recognise them.

    Thanks.

Well, Frederick probably also deserved to be "Honourably Mentioned" but I still think that all four of you listed did great job (and provided enough blog posts to qualify).

Many of my nights were also sleepless but I failed to complete anyway, that's why I feel your prizes are well deserved.

I didn't exactly count competitors blog posts but I was under impression that these four are well elaborated and good quality posts (and I put quality over quantity).

Some entries were more interesting than the others but that depends on personal preference. I honestly hoped and expected that you will be the winner (your and janis' projects were the most interesting to me).

I can understand that different models need to be experimented with, but the model for this challenge was very clear and was not changed at any point during the challenge.
It is unfair to change this after the facts. If the rule is not applicable, it should be removed. It is still mentioned for both Enchanted Objects and Sci Fi Your Pi.

If people decide to ignore the weekly blog rule (to work on another challenge!), it is their choice, but they should not be rewarded for it. It has also been mentioned before that the community choice is unfortunately not about the projects, but more about who can rally the most people to vote for them.

Anyway, I don't agree with how things were done, but this is my opinion and I don't expect anyone to agree.

OK, I get your point, it makes sense.

On the other hand, enforcing weekly posts only increases the number of "I'm just letting you know that I was unable to make progress this week" posts (or some trivial updates).

    EDIT: Inappropriate comment removed.

I think it's O.K. to get people to go vote. For example, I follow and am followed by members of Element 14 on Twitter. I tweeted for people to "get out" and vote, but that doesn't mean they have to vote for me. In fact, I don't think anyone, besides myself, should have voted for me (read my blog summary for reasoning). Thank you to the one other person that did, but I feel it was likely an obligatory vote for my surface mount and PCB tutorials. If your suspicions are correct and some lobbying or rallying took place to vote for a particular person, then shame on that person. That would be completely unethical and any engineer should conduct themselves in a better manner.

Edit: I should clarify here, that I'm not talking about when I say to a buddy, "Hey, go vote for me!". People do that all the time, although you could argue it's unfair. I'm talking about using a position of power to sway a vote. For example, if you are a teacher and you get all your students to vote for you, then that's the unethical part.

Edit 2: I have spoken to Inderprert, and I don't think anything unethical has occurred. It's a Community Choice award and the community spoke.
