Field Programmable Gatecrasher

So, I'm not one of the Path to Programmable trainees, but I decided to get a MiniZed and try to follow along with everyone else's blogs. I'm a hitchiker on the Path to Programmable. Anyone care to join me?

I'm hoping that there will be enough info disseminated by the bloggers to help me along the path with them. And thanks to kk99, I've also got an Arty S7 which should make thing easier if I'm "just" looking at the FPGA side of things. FPGAs are looking fun so far and I found a good Verilog tutorial, but I can see there is so much to learn if I'm going to get past emulating a few logic gates and blinking an LED or two.

Hi David, This is great that you'll also be working on this!! I'll definitely keep it in mind that there are others like me who are beginners while writing up things. I was excited to see rsc MiniZed enclosure…

I'm enjoying reading all the blog posts and finding them informative. The applicants seem to be doing a great job evaluating the Path to Programmable course, which apparently may become public at a later…

I'll leave it to one of the trainees to confirm how well Path to Programmable does this, but I'm finding the Avnet Speedway training lacking in exactly this area so far.

I'm particularly interested in knowing how well the Path to Programmable content explains the 'why' of doing something.

Most tutorials come with instructions on how to configure stuff, but they leave out the 'why', which makes it a little difficult if you want to learn to use a new peripheral/IP since you don't know where to look.

I'm still flowing along and the older Avnet Speedway course still seems to be in sync - as far as lab 5 at least. There are only a few minor differences between 2017.4 and 2018.2 that I've noticed so far. Even choosing Verilog over the suggested VHDL hasn't thrown a spanner in the works.

The lad instructions all clear enough, but I still get that feeling that when I'm adding an AXI BRAM Controller I have no idea what I'm doing. Sure, I know roughly what it is, but not why it has to be configured how I'm told it should be.

I can confirm that the Avnet Speedway Workshops do seems to be broadly the same as the Path to Programmable course - well up to lab 2 at least. It seems they were written quite a while ago and updated through various versions of Vivado. Path to Programmable looks like an overhaul and re-write of this that's being beta tested on 8 guinea pigs before release.

I'm following along too, though I'm not exactly in sync with the challengers.

I'm using the Zynq Z-7020 on a Digilent Zybo Z7-20.

I just finished figuring out how to use the Block RAM, and how to link a HDL design in the PL to the PS using the AXI4-Lite bus.
