Something is still missing

A While ago I got a new shipment. It's a 8X8 LED matrix kit for Raspberry Pi. The idea is that I'll assembly the kit and use it to practice programming on the device - and then eventually I'll just replace the LEDs with resistors or something.. at least that's the theory.

I'm still missing something and that is the motivation to start. I know once I start, things will move quickly as I cannot leave any problem unsolved, but also, as I know that this project will consume all my free time for some weeks. I'm afraid to start.

That is a common problem and of course there are no easy solutions. It sometimes works to break it down into very small tasks so it is really quick to complete one task, but until you actually do one the…

Have you considered resistance wire rather than resistors? If you wound it in a spiral and glued it to the back of the thermochromic material it might allow for larger, more even pixels than with actual…

That's a good idea. Frankly I have not yet been thinking so far. My plan was first to figure out how to control a matrix display with the LED-unit and maybe trying to connect it to the camera etc. Once…

The heat pad is effectively the same as what I was suggesting (resistance wire laid back and forth across the pad); I hadn't thought of repurposing something like that but it's a very easy way to get going if it does what you want it to do visually.

Having slow dissipation of the heat (no forced cooling) could be interesting from a visual point of view - the images would appear quickly and then fade slowly over several minutes like lingering ghosts of themselves.

I really ought to stop trying to do your project for you. Maybe I should join you and Dubbie as an independent participant and have a go myself.

That's a good idea. Frankly I have not yet been thinking so far. My plan was first to figure out how to control a matrix display with the LED-unit and maybe trying to connect it to the camera etc. Once that is ready I need to replace the LEDs with MOSFET's that control the actual load. If that is resistors or resistance wire loops, does not really matter. That is probably the easiest part.

I have been thinking of different ways to insulate or cool down the heat elements to prevent "leaking" and to make changes more quick, but I have not yet tested it in real life. My early tests I made with a static heat pad. I also have a peltier element which could be used.

Nice to know that I'm not the only one. The feeling of having "so much time" and "if I started, I could easily get this done" just makes it too comfortable to take it easy - until you notice there is one week left and you have not yet started.

Also I have not made the official application - although if I did and was accepted, there would be more pressure to get things done.

As stated in my earlier post, I have not applied to be an official challenger. I just privately purchased the same stuff that comes with the kit and additionally this LED kit. Also I have some other components lying around from earlier projects.

    Juha,

I often find myself in a similar situation, especially when the sun is shining, as it is at the moment. I often tell my wife that I'm inversely powered by the sun - whenever it shines I just have to sit/lie down in the sun and have a doze.

It is also the reason I have not made an official PiCasso Design Challenge application. I managed to get an old Raspberry Pi B running connected via Ethernet, for the purposes of gaining experience and then just stopped. There's still time for an unofficial entry though.

    Dubbie
