Experimenting with Polymer Capacitors: About the Competition

Experimenting with Polymer Capacitors

About Competition | Blogging | Example Application | The Judges | Terms & Conditions | The Challengers | The Quiz | Polymer Capacitors Video | Replacing MLCCs with Polymer Capacitors Video | Passive Components

We’re calling on all of element14's makers, hobbyists, and engineers to experiment with polymer capacitors. All experimenters are eligible to win a Keysight InfiniiVision 1000 X-Series Digital Oscilloscope.

Who Can Join?

Anyone can join the 'Experimenting with Polymer Capacitors' competition by including at least one of the kit's polymer capacitors in his/her experiments. But to receive one of 9 FREE Polymer Capacitor Kits, you need to submit an application by the extended enrollment deadline, 22 April 2019.

FAQs

What is the 'Experimenting with Polymer Capacitors' Competition?

This is a hands-on competition that everyone in the Community can participate in. Instead of requiring a participant to produce a full prototype, project, or original circuit design, we decided that we'd give our members the opportunity in this competition to experiment, test, breadboard, or just play around with Polymer Capacitors, and then tell us about their experiments, and what they learned about Polymers Capacitors in some blog postings.

What kind of experiments will the participants perform?

It depends on your interests. Some people may opt to design an original circuit with Polymer Capacitors. But you could also build some basic R-C, L-C, or R-C-L circuits to illustrate the use of the Polymers. Are you into soldering? Well, then you can build and experiment around soldering Polymers. Or, you could design a PCB with a CAD program and show us your design. Some people could even modify an existing circuit by replacing the populated capacitors with Polymer Capacitors. Use your imagination and creativity! We want you to Get Charged with Polymer Capacitors!

What do I need to do to win the Grand Prize?

We knew you were going to ask that. After the enrollment period is complete, and the 9 FREE Polymer Capacitor Kits are shipped, you will have 1 month to complete your experiment, write two blogs on what you did, and share what you learned about Polymer Capacitors. YOU WILL BE JUDGED BY THE QUALITY OF THE FINAL BLOG AND WHAT YOU LEARNED ABOUT POLYMER CAPACITORS.

Even if you don't win the free kit you are still eligible to win the Grand Prize, as long as you include one of the Polymer Capacitors from the kit in your experiment AND write two blogs by the deadline. The capacitors are very inexpensive, so even a maker, a student, or a hobbyist can join the competition.

What do I get if I don’t win the Grand Prize, but wrote the two blogs?

If you successfully finished the competition, you will receive a finisher prize.

Important Dates

The important dates of the 'Experimenting with Polymer Capacitors' Competition are:

Enrollment Begins:March 27 2019
Enrollment Ends:April 22 2019
Applicants Selected:April 29 2019
Challenge Begins:May 6 2019
Challenge Ends:June 6 2019

Blogging Requirement

To successfully finish 'Experimenting with Polymer Capacitors' you must write two blogs during the competition period. In the first blog, participants must introduce themselves and discuss what experiments they plan to conduct. In the second blog, participants must discuss the results of their experiments and share what they learned about polymer capacitors.  Please also tag your blogs with 'Experimenting with Polymer Capacitors.'

    Thanks Frank.

I'd like to underscore what you said: it is VERY easy to be part of this challenge. The experiments can be something very simple to something more complex. I wanted to make sure everyone could…

    To all applicants....

I'd like to thank everyone for submitting an application. And there were plenty good ideas.

So, we will announced the 5 winners of the polymer capacitor kit plus tester.

This is a different type of challenge for sure, but pretty cool. I don't need the prizes, but I like the idea of the challenge as an incentive to dive into some component technology and of course the ESR…

It's great having all this focus on capacitor selection.

I was using TI's online tool (Webench) today to come up with a DC-DC buck converter for a project, and the tool was initially selecting two large MLCC caps (100uF) for the output. However, seeking alternatives, I noticed it also had Panasonic TPE series Tantalum Polymer : ) which is one of the components in the challengers' kit list. The tool estimated that efficiency would be almost identical despite the higher ESR, so that settled it. I'm using Panasonic TPE for some DC-DC converters designs : ) Footprint was almost similar, cost was almost the same, and I get to have a higher capacitance, plus it will likely maintain its capacitance with a DC bias better than the 100uF X5R.

You can see who the challengers are by going to the box at the top of the page and clicking on 'The Challengers' (took me a while to realise).

Since I just received a box in the mail with an ESR meter and a bunch of caps, I assume i'm now in the challenge.

    Thanks,

    Scott

    To all applicants....

I'd like to thank everyone for submitting an application. And there were plenty good ideas.

So, we will announced the 5 winners of the polymer capacitor kit plus tester.

But I did want to tell you have these five were selected. They were based solely on the application.

I sent the applications to our judges, who independently ranked the applications based on their quality.

I reviewed the list and chose the ones that both of our judges thought were the best applications.

So, we will announced those 5 today and ship them the kits this week.

    There will be more winners.........

I spoke with my boss about the applications and the fact I thought we had more than 5 great applications. It was hard to predict a few months ago the level of interest in this kind of competition. So, I opted for just getting 5 kits. Well, after we discussed in and looked at the budget, I'm placing an order today to get some more kits. So, there will be more winners in the next week or so. So, stay tuned.

    Thanks again.

    Randall

It means the enrollment is closed if you don't see the orange join the challenge button.

I am willing to re-open it for 1 hour, if you are indeed going to apply today.
