Question: Is the MAX30208EVSYS Board working for you?

Hi Challengers,  While I was trying to interface the MAX30208EVSYS, I am unable to see  MAX30208 on I2C Scanner. Looking at Logic Analyzer, I am seeing the SCL Line held low consistently so even the first address of the I2C scanner is not being completed. The behavior is same with and without the Flex sensor of MAX320208 being attached. So, I am coming to think it might be the DS2484 which also sits on the same I2C Lines. Based on the Schematics of the EVSYS, it should be powered and hence no reason to clamp the SCL Down.

  • Jumpers were checked
  • Pullups  is working correctly
  • No shorts of SCL to GND
  • The SCL being low is regardless of whether the flex cable is attached or not
  • The same firmware identifies the MAX30102 Sensor when connected to the breakout board (lines were removed from the MAX30208EVSYS Board)
  • Continuity tested between J10 of the EVSYS Board and the NRF-DK

Now, I am gonna sit on this tomorrow with a fresh mind maybe even try and remove the DS2484. So If anyone is running into trouble. do let me know, We can have a discussion on this. Any help will be grateful.

    UPDATE: I de-soldered the DS2484 and it works!! Root Cause is still unknown. I still can't figure out what is the function of DS2484 in this board.

    I tested today my sensor MAX0208 from MAX30208EVSYS board and I managed to read the sensor without any problems.The jumpers config used by me is this: J3 and J4 opened (I already have the I2c pull-up resistors in my initial board), J6 in 1-2 and J5 in 2-3. Chip DS2484R+ is an I2C to 1-wire bridge and respont to address 0x18;  probably I will use this to read an DS18B20 sensor but not right now. Another thing: I read the max30208 sensor using the registers instead using some libraries, if that matters.

    I observed this behavior, after some time: I can not read the temperature correctly (is not stable or I have I2C transactions dropped) and I have this in serial console:

    E (2291) i2c.master: I2C transaction unexpected nack detected
    E (2292) i2c.master: s_i2c_synchronous_transaction(945): I2C transaction failed
    E (2293) i2c.master: i2c_master_multi_buffer_transmit(1207): I2C transaction failed
    [ 2031][E][esp32-hal-i2c-ng.c:265] i2cWrite(): i2c_master_transmit failed: [259] ESP_ERR_INVALID_STATE

    Then I see something in datasheet: the I2C connection for MAX30105 can be "routed to other ports from J2 using JP7 and JP8. So, Using JP7 and JP8 in position 1, DS2484R+ is isolated from general I2C communication from the dev board.

    In this way I succedded to comunicate stable with this sensor.

    I also see an possible issue with DS2484R+: the pin used for one-wire communication in not connected to a pull-up rezistor; moreover, can be connected directly to Vdd through JP6 in possition 3-4 and this can cause am power supply shortage if the DS2484R+ will try to communicate with some one-wire devices...
