Introduction Blog,

Hello Everybody,

As I plan to Upcycle an old video VHS player, this week I will tune it as I will remove everything from the video player that I am NOT going to use. After that I will manage to put a power supply for the Arduino (5volts).

Also I plan to start installing cables for the sensors that are going to measure the temperature outside. Also I will explore more in details the ability to get out video signal or at least trigger some another device to get out the video signal.

For this weekend, I also plan to make some measurements based on internet specifications of the KIT, so I can figure out the design for mounting everything in the old VHS player, which will make it as a smart box.

I already have exlore OpenWeatherMap and next is the platform Cayenne. I want to send my measurements to the platform also, so I can easily monitor the values.

Also I plan to get alarm cables similar to this one: image

with four wires or at least I can use an UTP cable.

Also as I was written in my project, the VHS smart box will make possible to trigger on some inside furniture light, so soon I will post the livingroom furniture and explain where I want to put the lights (led rgb stripe). Also in Sunday I will upload a picture with the very special place for my VHS smart box. I have very good place!

Overview of my idea:

That's it for now.

Hi Ognyan, If you are lucky the power supply for the VCR will be separate from the main board and you will be able to get your needed 5 volts from it. That way you could conserve the original mains power…

I wonder if you can somehow encorporate front panel switches or the sockets? Perhaps there is an audio amplifier in there too that could be used?

There is a wealth of useful parts in an old VCR. The audio and video amplifiers can be very useful plus the motors and sensors can be repurposed for other uses. Combining it with a weather station provides…

Yeah, but please consider myself as not very good at electronic circuits. I will explore the VHS player tonight. What about the idea just manage to use the buttons, but only the mechanical part of them and then hook up them to the new board. Also I plan to use the display from the kit that is provided. It will be easier for me to drive it, otherwise the player display has separate driver maybe. What do you think?

I will explore the VHS player tonight.

Take some pictures and post here, some of the members might be able to let you know if it can be re-used.

Also lookup the model number and see if there is a manual / schematics.
