Making the frame

Materials

1.2m by 2.4m OSB wood

ItemCost GBP
1.2 by 2.4m OSB wood£13
12mm wood dowel£4
2m gutter half pipe£5
plumbing pipe clips£1.50
4 reclaimed metal legsFREE

I have decided to use OSB wood for this project although it is not nice to cut or screw into it is quite strong and very cheap compared to plywood or solid wood

wooden dowel has been used for the rotation section of the frame this needs to be water proof but instead of using pvc pipe which would have been to flexible for copper pipe which would have been to costly i decided to use wooden dowels that were approx 30cm long they are strong enough to support the weight and also can be sealed to make them water tight

for the planters i am using guttering with a wooden stop at each end this will also be sealed from water the pipe clips will be used to hold the planters onto the dowels but still giving them enough room to rotate freely

the legs? well i just happened to have 4 metal legs on my desk that had come off of a piece of furniture that was being thrown away and the lightbulb came on and decided that they would be great at lifting the frame off the floor this wasn't needed but is a nice look

What's Next

(it hasn't been fully built this was put together to show how it will look)

paint or add reflective material to the inside

start ordering components

i will have  full blog post specifically on what parts i will be ordering and what i will be using them for

yea it does look exactly like it thank you for the kind words OSB is not waterproof but i will be waterproofing the surfaces with either reflective Mylar (emergency blankets) as there cheaper than buying…

Well, you did a besutiful job working with a difficult material.

Deck chair and cold snack is the plan! image

yea it does look exactly like it

thank you for the kind words

OSB  is not waterproof but i will be waterproofing the surfaces with either reflective Mylar (emergency blankets) as there cheaper than buying a roll that will be attached using spray adhesive then the edges will be sealed using a waterproof silicone

also i have a slight fetish for OSB it is like the underdog of wood rarely used as a finishing wood (I.E. on the visible edge of a product) but with the right finish it can look amazing also the same said for its strength it chips easily and is hard to nail or screw through its edge but if done correctly it can look really good which i hope the finished product will do

(google OSB flooring or OSB desk for some examples of its finished look

also i did a test on a small piece to see the effects of stain and oil finish on the outside and although it came out looking good i think i will go for a varnish or a waterproof paint as the wood does soak up liquid very fast and oil or stain is just not viscous enough

in hindsight i would have used a perspex or acrylic but my knowledge on acrylic is very basic and i wouldn't have wanted to add complexity to the prototype and i have been working with wood for at least 10 years since i was a child so it was inevitably the material of choice (i am only 21)

you should hand your sons the paperwork get out the deck chair and a cold drink of choice (if your weather is nice) and "supervise" there work while enjoying a relaxing weekend (until someone measures once and cuts twice)

    SWEET!

Looks just like your cardboard prototype. So cool to watch the model become the real thing. Man that is a great looking design.

Disclaimer: Which I will likely steal after the challenge. image

The OSB is waterproof? I thoughy they used a water based wood glue to make that. I'm obviously wrong.

Beautiful desing and clean implementation. Looks great Shane!

I do have some materials ordered that should be here today and tomorrow. And I think I have alll the kinks worked out. On paper anyway.

Hopefully I will find some help this weekend, among my three sons, in getting my build started.  I'm still incapacitated, but I can oversee their work. image
