Project: ferris farm post 8

14 Aug 2015

Today is going to be an update on what i have been doing over the past 5 days

firstly i have been looking at the kit and what parts i am going to use for each task

The sensor puck

I will use this for realtime testing while programming the board

The wireless boards

I am hoping to use the boards to control all of the electronics i will have one board connected inside the unit and the second board either ontop of the unit or in a second unit that would sit on my desk or anywhere in the house that will have LEDs to tell me what the unit is doing (red yellow green LEDs for knowing if it is to high to low or just right for each sensor

The Zero gecko board

currently i am yet to implement this into my design it is possible that this board will be used as my motor controller keeping the unit turning at a set speed or at intervals

Motors

my plan now is to use a small geared stepper motor if on doesnt have enough power to turn the unit i have 4 more that i will add untill i have the required power but the low friction of the design should mean that one will be sufficient

Water & food

My water supply will be located in a small fishtank (because i had an empty tank that needed a use) that happens to be just about the right size with a small modification i will have 2 pumps located in the water and possibly a aerator pump aswell

secondly i have been working on the unit its self

the outside walls are nailed and glued into place

the rotisserie has been aligned and also glued

the planters have been water sealed from both ends

4 legs have been added to increase the height of the design for easier use and also so that any leaks can be observed if the occur

i should have parts ordered within the next week or so and then i can get on with finalising the build

sorry about no images today i havnt had time to compress my camera photos as they are to large for the site to allow but i will make it up with a video in the near future

Shane

sounds like our base is quite similar just different rotations im going to be using skateboard bearings to hold the system in place and i believe im using the same stepper motor as you but i might need…

I have heard of them also windows 10 has a built in 3d printing service but it's about pricy and uses a 3rd part website Yes it's a real thing but not just one we have poundland, pound world, 99p store…

I live in South Mississippi, down on the Gulf Coast. And we have several claims to fame as well. We are the fatest region in the fatest state in the fatest country in the world. Yep, we got some large folks around here. And my particualr area is one of the least educated and with a pretty high teen pregnanyc rate as well. So, we have that going for us.

Yes it's a real thing but not just one we have poundland, pound world, 99p store and many other none branded stores they basically get stuff that is mass produced and breaks after 5 minutes but they have also of good buys I use there superglue alot something like 20 tubes for 1 pound

On a fun note they sell pregnancy tests in packs of 2 also for 1 pound ( where I live apparently has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Europe)

Yes, sounds similar. Just different axis of rotation.

Hey, check our ShapeWays.com. They do one off 3D printing that's fairly reasonable. I'm going to use them for my sprinkler head.

Pound Store. lol... Is that a real thing?

im going to be using skateboard bearings to hold the system in place and i believe im using the same stepper motor as you but i might need to use a couple of them and then adapt a rubber rc wheel to the shaft to give me the friction to turn the system as i will be rotating it from the outside edge of the donut (circle with cutout sidewall of the planter this is where a 3d printer would be very handy but its surprising what you can find at the pound store/ dollar store that can be adapted to use instead

Sounds like you're making solid progress Shane.

I am missing two parts needed to finish my rotator system. Hopefully, they will arrive today.
