Question concerning the design challenge kit...

RWReynolds
RWReynolds over 10 years ago

I have a question concerning the kit provided for this challenge.

On the kit description page, Vertical Farming Design Challenge - Kit List,  it lists two separate SL microcontroller devices.

The EFM32Tm Zero Gecko Starter Kit and the EZR32 Wonder Gecko Starter Kit.

However in the unboxing video, https://youtu.be/rPN4RmauEvE, David Finch references only the EZR32 Wonder Gecko Starter Kit.

And even though the box appears to contain two complete units he says the kit includes 1 each.

I'm assuming he means 1 each kit, and not unit, as he goes on to explain the mission critical nature of the comm link.

But he never mentions or shows the EFM32Tm Zero Gecko Starter Kit at all.

Just looking for clarification on what's included so I can move forward with design while waiting on delivery.

Thanks,

Rick Reynolds

Hi shabaz , actually the EFM32 Zero Gecko Starter Kit is included in the overall kit. It was a late entry into the materials supplied by Silicon Labs (after we shot the video) There terms and conditions…

Cool... So that's two BRD4001 motherboards, two EZR32 Wonder Geko radio/MCU boards and a separate EFM32 Zero Geko low power MCU. Plus pieces and parts. That's a lot to work with. Thanks for clearing that…

Hi Dave, Oh I see. Thanks for the clarification!

    Hi Rick,

The EZR32 Wonder Gecko Starter Kit contains two base boards and two microcontroller/radio boards, see the EZR32 Wonder Gecko Starter Kit Silicon Labs page for more information. It assembles

into two units, each unit being a base board and the microcontroller/radio board. As you say, this can then be used for communication between the two units. One kit containing the two units is supplied

    for the challenge.

The EFM32 Zero Gecko Starter Kit is not part of the supplied materials for the challenge, I think that was a mistake on the page you mention, element14Dave can hopefully clarify.

EDIT: My mistake, clarified by Dave below that it does include the EFM32 Zero Gecko Starter Kit.

That's what I'm thinking as well Shabaz.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

Dave, any further info on this?

There terms and conditions are up to date with the contents of the kit.

Thanks for clearing that up Dave.

    A couple of other questions...

I am considering adding an RPi to the system for greater control and easier IoT connectivity. Is it acceptable to use additional devices, in addition to the kit parts?

IMPORTANT: Also will the US competitors receive the  SLWSTK6222ASLWSTK6222A 915MHz version of the EZ32 starter kit I found a blurb in the terms and conditions suggesting that we should specify in our applications if we needed other than the 868MHz version I'm not sure I did that but would like to make that request now As I believe the US assigns the 902MHz to 928MHz bands for sub gigahertz 802.15.4 use

    Thanks,

    RWReynolds

    Rick,

I asked for the 915 Mhz kit as well in my application since US requires communication in that range. As to the added other things, yes you can as long as the EZ32 remains part of the design.
