My fathers garage

HELLO Ben!

My father owns a huge car and when he is parking in the garage he is unable to see the distance between the bumper of the car and the wall of the garage. So I am planning to make a mechanism that senses the distance between the bumper and the wall and warns the driver if he comes too close to the wall.If you know how to make this project please tell me how to make it.

                                                                                                                                          From Andy.

    Hi Andy,

It is not so difficult you can use a ultrasonic sensor or a infra red distance sensor and a Arduino UNO board and some other components , you can find many references on YouTube, I have added one example HERE...

Best of Luck for your project...

What you could do is use foil and some wires to set the connection and wire it up to a Audio Jack with a beeping programe. Or you could use a raspberry pi cam to work over internet wirelessly to a pi with monitor in the car with a power source, so let's say your using a vodafone USB Internet thingy, and the picam is working over a internet server! you could possible write a program on the pi in The car so when you need to you can plug in your USB pay as you go 3G dongle or something to connect to the internet, connect to the domain for Pi cam, type down the password for it, and you can see from the wall of the garage, and see the bumper of the car, and sensors on the cam alert you with a Python based alarm of some Sort, and the camera showing the car and how close it is image  Hope this helps

    Hi Andy,

While you construct your project you can do what my Dad did. He hung a tennis ball on a string from the ceiling and positioned it so that it just touched his window when his car was in the proper place in the garage. When the car wasn't in the garage there was always a chance that someone might walk into the suspended ball but since it was soft and brightly colored this was seldom a problem. Building the electronics project will be a lot more fun but the ball will solve the immediate problem.

I did the same for my wife, as the car needed to be parked exactly in the right spot.

Works a treat when you drive forwards .... not so good for backwards.

If I recall there was a 'parking assist' project in the arduino area some time back.

The details are sketchy, but I thought it mounted on the back wall and used three lights/leds and was based on one of the cheap utrasonic sensors.

    Pinched my idea image

Cheap easy to read and requires no batteries or instructions. Not sure it can be easily improved upon?!
